The best RPG pairings of all time

Usually an RPG will have a romantic relationship of some sort. They started out simple, but soon grew to feature two characters who share deep connections with each other as they technologically grew and matured on consoles. Since video games rebooted on the NES in 1985, there have been about forty years of romance in video games, including RPGs.

Out of the many, many titles out there, which two characters have the best ties in their games? These will be ranked based on the longevity of the romances shown in the games, along with how much affection is shown. Do these characters simply share a few words and a kiss, or will they go to the ends of the earth for each other?

Valvatorez and Artina

From blood to sardines

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten the main character is an Overlord, Valvatorez, who is a vampire who refuses to drink blood. A long time ago, he promised a girl named Artina that he would eat sardines instead of drinking blood to prove that he was a good person, but in his pursuit she unfortunately died.

That said, he kept his promise and continued to eat sardines, and during the game's campaign he met a greedy angel named Vulcanus who looked a lot like Artina. It turns out that it is actually her, and the two reconcile because, as the title suggests, a promise was never forgotten.

Gustave & Sophie

Kiss From A Rose

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 starts with a punch to the stomach along with one of the sweetest romances in the game. Gustave is the starting protagonist getting ready to say goodbye to those who will die during this year's Gomage, a festival that magically kills everyone of a certain age.

One of these characters is Sophie, and the two share a past. They make up during the festival, and in just half an hour players can get exactly what their background is and how much the two mean to each other before Sophie turns into a rose petal and dies. It is therefore the beginning of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is so powerful.

Ruaidhrigh & Antea

Love never dies

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden begins with a paranormal hunter named Antea who helps people in her culture take care of unfinished business like ghosts. Unfortunately, she dies in the tutorial section, leaving behind her beloved Ruaidhrigh, who then becomes the playable character.

But their love is so strong, Antea is permanently attached to Ruaidhrigh as a ghost, and while this may seem romantic, it's also a little difficult for the relationship. Sadness, guilt, anger and more emotions come to the fore during the campaign, but what remains true is their love through thick and thin.

Bayek and Aya

Our Son SHALL Be Avenged

Assassin's Creed Origins is currently the game at the back of the game Assassin's Creed series, which sets up the Brotherhood, or as it's called in-game, The Hidden Ones. Bayek, the protagonist, sees his child, Khemu, murdered, and together with his wife, Aya, the two work against a mysterious masked organization to get revenge and answers.

In their commitment to revenge, they are two peas in a pod, although they spend much of the game apart. They leave at the end of the game, even after everything they go through, but it's not because they stop loving each other. They know that brotherhood is more important than their love could ever be, so Bayek stays in Egypt while Aya goes to Rome. It's sad, but the sacrificial romance is understandable.

Undyne & Alphys

A warrior and a scientist walk into a bar…

Undertale is a relatively short RPG that manages to flesh out its characters more than an RPG that lasts forty hours. Undyne is one of the boss characters players will encounter, while Alphys, who has Lisa Simpson vibes, is a scientist who works for the same kingdom as Undyne.

Through dialogue, it's clear that the two have a thing for each other, but both are a little shy to admit it, which leads to the fan community developing their relationship. Although they are not an obvious love couple Undertalethe subtlety of their dialogue spells it out, which is a sweet touch.

Zidane & Garnet

A classic romance

Zidane and Garnet are the two main characters in Final Fantasy 9. Zidane, a villain, is hired to kidnap Garnet, a princess of Alexandria, when, unbeknownst to him, she also wants to leave. What works about their relationship is that Zidane flirts with her, but isn't obnoxiously thirsty.

He tries to help her grow as a person and shows that there are other sides to being royalty, and in turn, Garnet gives Zidane a way to vent her feelings. It's a classic fantasy love story from one of the most adventure and love-centric games in the world Final Fantasy series.

Commander Shepard & Liara

The Preferred Romance by Fox News

Mass effect is one of the rare games that allows players to customize their character, including gender. Through dialogue choices, they can also choose their partner, and the overwhelming choice of many fans for Commander Shepard, for either gender, is Liara.

Liara's people, the Asari, all have feminine traits, which makes her attraction to a female version of Commander Shepard make more sense while still being a bit off limits. Also, their final romance scene was flagged on Fox News in 2008 as a graphic endeavor, which is laughable now to say the least. Aside from Fox News, Liara is a top-notch romantic option Mass effect.

Geralt & Yennefer

Three games to find her

The Witcher The game series follows Geralt's quest to find his beloved Yennefer, among other quests, and at the beginning of The Witcher 3: Wild Huntthere she is. Finally, players got to meet Yennefer and experience more of her backstory within the game universe, including an infamous bathtub scene.

While longtime fans may have fallen in love with Triss in the second game, it was clear that Geralt still longed for Yennifer. They are essentially a couple with an adopted daughter, Ciri. While they may not be perfect parents or people in general, their devotion to each other and Ciri is astronomical.

Sora & Kairi

Hearts Forever Broken

Kingdom Heartsand the whole saga, is about Sora and Kairi longing for each other, but they are always worlds apart. In the first game, Sora loses his best friend to the darkness, Riku, while Kairi is kidnapped. Once he saves her, Sora sacrifices his heart to become a monster, a Heartless, which eventually leads to him getting his body back and Kairi being sent home with a tearful goodbye.

Currently, their relationship is still beyond words and is complicated to get into, just like everyone else Kingdom Heartsbut suffice it to say, this young love is ultimately what the series is about.

Noah & Mio

Willing to go evil

Noah and Mio belong to two different nations in Xenoblade Chronicles 3so they start out as mortal enemies. When both sides learn there's a worse plan at hand, they team up to bond and transform into mech-like creatures called Ouroboros. Noah and Mio grow on each other and can transform the fastest among the group, and the ultimate kick is the time warp in the game.

The thought of losing Mio became so horrible to Noah that he became a villain, and Mio fought alongside him. As Kingdom Heartsthe Xenoblade Chronicles 3 the story is hard to sum up neatly, but Noah and Mio's devotion through time is what all romances should be about.
