Why Broly Vs. Jiren is not even close

Dragon Ball and power scaling has seemingly been rampant since the manga's debut in the 80s, and this topic only grew more heated with each passing arc and new villain. Even if Dragon Ball Super manga has come further than its anime counterpart, Jiren and Broly still considered two of the most powerful powers in the series, they're both big guys with straight designs and muscles that could crush Goku or Vegeta.

Putting their fight aside Dragon Ball Super Heroesthese two have never fought in the main series, and it's a little hard to imagine a scenario that could bring them together for a legendary showdown. However, that doesn't mean fans can't have a blast debating who would have their hands raised at the end of the encounter. Honestly, if these two fight, only one of them will likely live to see another day (though Dragon Balls reluctance to kill characters).

A battle for Dragon Ball's ultimate powerhouse

Who is the strongest between Broly and Jiren?

    • Broly's first appearance: Dragon Ball Super: Broly
    • Jiren's first appearance: Dragon Ball Superepisode 85, “The Universe Goes Into Action — Each With Their Own Motives”

For all their differences in power and abilities, Broly and Jiren are quite similar in many ways. For example, when they were introduced, they were both much stronger than Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue states, enough to completely ragdoll the heroes at once in their most powerful forms at the time. Both of these mortals proved that one does not need God Ki to reach the highest level of strength.

In fact, both situations required the heroes to gain a power-up to defeat them that was far greater than anything that came before it. Now, the fandom is divided between whether Jiren taking on Ultra Instinct Goku was more impressive or Broly taking on Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta, but what is clear is the fact that without a significant increase in power beyond what they already had, there was no way for Goku or Vegeta to defeat these foes. However, with contextual analysis and additional clues from within the manga, it can be concluded that Broly may just be the more powerful of the two, at least for now.

The main reason is confirmed in Super manga, as God Ki or other divine techniques are not required to overpower anyone using them. In the manga, Beast Gohan and Granolah's incredible speed made them so fast that Ultra Instinct Goku's instinctive evasion was unable to react to their attacks, showing that Broly's unmatched potential may have eventually allowed him to overpower Goku if the latter used Ultra Instinct in his fight.

While Jiren also held his own at first, Ultra Instinct Goku toyed with him at the end of their fight. In addition to this, Goku and Vegeta were much stronger against Broly compared to themselves in the Tournament of Power due to their Zenkai Boosts, so this knowledge makes Broly beating them mercilessly in his base form much more impressive than previously thought.

I was so sure my strength was nearing its peak. But then this guy showed up and was so much stronger than me! He's probably even stronger than Beerus!

Also, Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta was needed to defeat Broly, which is not only the strength of Goku and Vegeta combined, but an extra power boost on top of that, which they got because of the fusion dance. While many argue that the fusion could have defeated Broly while in his normal Super Saiyan form, Gogeta felt the need to go blue to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible. With all of this in mind, Broly lasting as long as he did is really a sign of how strong he is, as Gogeta is much stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku.

A counter argument some make here is how quickly Jiren dispatched Golden Frieza compared to Broly, who continued to beat him for an hour. The answer to this lies in Superhero movie, where Vegeta states that Jiren's power was not much greater than his or Goku's during the tournament, just that his level of Ki control was far superior. So this just shows that he knows how to maximize his power, while Broly, in his desperate Berserker state, was just grinding his enemy without even thinking about what he was doing. In a conversation about who is a stronger fighter, Broly takes the victory.

Dragon Ball: The Challenges of Mastering Ultra Ego, Explained

Ultra Ego is a transformation that was introduced in Dragon Ball Super, but what might the challenges be in mastering it?

Will it always stay this way? Will Broly always be stronger than Jiren?

What is the answer to this in the current environment?

While the answer to the question is pretty clear based on what fans have seen from the series, it gets tricky again when speculating how a battle between the two would play out, given where the story is right now. Although Broly has perfected his Berserker Saiyan state and can control his power much better than ever before, fans have no idea what Jiren has been up to ever since the Tournament of Power ended.

Being a battle genius as well as a master at controlling and applying his power, it is entirely within the realm of possibility for Jiren to have unlocked some version of Ultra Instinct as well. After watching Goku unlock the state during the tournament, Jiren could have trained all these years to do it as well, and seeing how calm and collected he already is, he could achieve it much easier than Goku did. If that's the case or if he's unlocked some other type of power-up, this debate will definitely come up again.

What do Super Dragon Ball Heroes have to say?

Promo Anime Picks a Clear Winner (But It's Not Relevant in More Ways Than One)

super dragon ball heroes jiren vs broly

If you consume everything Dragon Ballthen you know for sure that Jiren and Broly have technically already fought. However, the fight takes place in Super Dragon Ball Heroesan official non-canon promo anime. This fight takes place in the same tournament that features SSB Goku vs. SS4 Goku, and during the same arc that gives Yamcha screen time. Nothing in Super Dragon Ball Heroes is meant to be taken seriously.

More importantly, Jiren fights against DBZ version of Broly, not Dragon Ball Super iteration. So it makes perfect sense that the former would annihilate the latter, since the original Broly's level is far below his DBS equivalent. Honestly, Jiren would have looked like a wuss if he couldn't beat this Broly.
