Ubisoft is planning a major release for January 2026

Ubisoft is reportedly planning to release the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in January 2026. Such a move, which is in line with Ubisoft's previously stated launch plans, could give the company a potentially strong sales contender during a typically quiet period for video game releases.

A modernized version of the 2003 classic was originally announced in 2020 as a joint project between Ubisoft's Mumbai and Pune studios. Two years later, the development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was transferred to Ubisoft Montreal, the creator of the original game. The move was made in response to fan backlash over the remake's reveal trailer, which failed to impress a vocal section of the fandom. In a May 2025 earnings report, Ubisoft said the game was on track for release in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2026.

A new report from Insider Gaming has now narrowed that release window, saying the game is slated to launch in January 2026, citing sources close to the project. Ubisoft is aiming for a mid-month release, with the title expected to debut simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, as previously announced. The claim is consistent with Ubisoft's previously stated launch date and a July 2025 teaser from CFO Frederick Duguet, who said at the time that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is on the horizon.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake may get a release date at TGA 2025

Insider Gaming's sources believe that the modernized version of The sands of time will likely be presented at the 2025 edition of The Game Awards, scheduled for December 11. As one of the industry's biggest events, TGA offers a high-profile opportunity for Ubisoft to announce the game's release date. Given the show's usual format, such a reveal would most likely come with a new trailer.

When it was first announced Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was scheduled for release in January 2021. Following the project's transfer from India to Canada – where developer salaries are significantly higher – its total budget likely far exceeded Ubisoft's initial projections. Whether the developer change affected the project's scope is unclear.

The remake will mark Ubisoft Montreal's first console game release since 2022 Role Champions. Since then, the Canadian studio has been working on the 2023 exclusive Meta Quest Assassin's Creed Nexus VR and Rainbow Six Mobilean upcoming title for Android and iOS devices. A new main line Assassin's Creed codename games Project Hexe is also currently in development at the Montreal-based company.
