Mega Greninja's days are numbered in Pokemon Legends: ZA

Pokemon Legends: ZA has been out for a little less than two weeks now, and while some fans still want to complete the story at their own pace, others are well into the hunt for the Shiny Charm game. No matter where you fall, Pokemon Legends: ZA has a lot of content to complete and rare animals to obtain, including the quests for Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde. Whether during the game's history or in ranked battles online, Mega Greninja has seen a lot of hype and use from fans. But its days are numbered and players must act fast.

For those looking for how to get Greninjite Pokemon Legends: ZAthe answer lies in online gaming. This might not be the perfect answer for those who don't want to pay for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but unfortunately it's the only way right now. It is not unusual for the series to have exclusive rewards for online play, and Pokemon Legends: ZA follows suit with its Gen 6 starters.

  • Mega Greninja/Branchingite is found in Pokemon Legends: ZAis ranked Season 1 to 4 November at 9:59 PM PST.
  • Mega Delphox/Delphixite will be available in Pokemon Legends: ZAis ranked Season 2starting November 5.
  • Mega Chesnaught/Chesnaughtite will be available in Pokemon Legends: ZAis ranked Season 3starting November 26.

What follows is that while Mega Greninja is one of the most popular and best Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: ZAs ranked battles, fans only have one more week to get it. Given the official website's wording, which states that Greninjite “cannot be obtained through normal play”, it is likely that this option will not be added in the future.

It's worth noting that some exclusive rewards from online games return from time to time, so Mega Greninja and Greninjite may return once or twice a year. However, this is not confirmed.

How to get Pokemon Legends: ZA's Greninjite and Mega Greninja, and why it's easy

To receive Greninjite, which is needed to bring in Mega Greninja Pokemon Legends: ZAplayers must reach Rank K in Season 1. Fortunately, this is easier than you might think, as winning is not mandatory. Players can earn points in the following ways:

  • X-Pokemon defeater – Challenge that rewards 10 points for each opposing Pokemon defeated in a battle.
  • Made the first attack – Challenge that rewards 10 points for attacking an opposing Pokemon before anyone else.
  • Made the final attack – Challenge that rewards 10 points to be the last to attack an opposing Pokemon.
  • First to claim an item – Challenge that rewards 10 points to the player who is the first to pick up an item in a battle.
  • First to Mega Evolve – Challenge that rewards 10 points to the player who Mega Evolves their Pokemon before anyone else.
  • Flawless survivor – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players whose Pokemon do not faint in a battle.
  • Fresh opponent hunter – Challenge that rewards 10 points to the player who attacks the opposing Pokémon at full health the most times.
  • Mega Evolution Destroyer – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who defeat a Mega Evolved Pokémon.
  • Mega-evolving champion – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who defeat an opposing Pokémon with a Mega Evolved Pokémon.
  • Most active attacker – Challenge that rewards 10 points to the player who lands the most attacks in a battle.
  • Plus Move master – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who defeat an opposing Pokémon with a Plus Move.
  • Scatter attacker – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who defeat at least one Pokémon from each opponent.
  • Super efficient attacker – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who use super effective moves 5 times or more in a battle.
  • Three-in-a-row KO – Challenge that rewards 10 points to players who get three consecutive KOs.

Additionally, a player's position at the end of the battle will add or deduct points from the total. First place is 30 points, second is 10, third is -10 and fourth is -30. As such, it's relatively easy to have a positive total score in a single game, and with ranks that don't disappear after they're earned, players can't really lose much progress. There are 13 10-point challenges, 1 challenge that gives 10 points for every opponent pokemon defeated, and then placement can also give up to 30 points.

November 5th officially marks the end of an era for Pokemon Legends: ZA

However, time is running out for Mega Greninja and Greninjite, as players can only get this exclusive item and Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: ZA until November 5. Since Greninjite is a reward for reaching Rank K, fans should get there at least from now, October 27th, until November 4th. The process requires a total of 15 ranks, from Rank Z for those who have yet to play online all the way to Rank K.

Early ranks are cleared very easily, and theoretically one can rack up well over 100 points in a single match under the right conditions. But the gate can still take a few hours of online play, depending on the player's familiarity with the mode. There is also a timer to keep an eye on, so players should score as many KOs as possible within the limit. All of this requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, so players must pay for it or use the 7-day free trial.

Why Pokémon Legends: ZA players can't miss this online battle milestone

Then Greninjite will become unavailable at the end of Season 1 on November 4thplayers who did not receive the exclusive item will not be able to use Mega Greninja in battle for the foreseeable future. Season 2 is about Mega Delphox and Season 3 is about Mega Chesnaught, so it's likely that Greninjite won't be back until at least the release date of Pokemon Legends: ZAs Mega Dimension DLC, if not a couple of months later. Fans need to act fast, and Halloween weekend might be the best time to grab a bunch of Season 1 wins.
