The 2006s Scarface: The World Is Yours could be on its way to modern platforms, perhaps through a re-release, remaster or even a remake. Speculation about this modest success in the mid-2000s has swirled since what appears to be an accidental early release on some digital storefronts. But this potential Scarface: The World Is Yours retaliation raises many questions.
Scarface: The World Is Yours launched to a generally favorable reception, with critics of the time rating it favorably. More than this Scarface adaptation and quasi-sequel nurtured something of a cult following in the years following its release, and is now seen by many as a time capsule of mid-2000s gaming, when licensed adaptations were on the shelves. All in all, the Montana-driven crime sandbox game is markedly different from what today's players are familiar with, which is what makes its resurgence on Steam and the Epic Games Store all the more remarkable.
Scarface: The World Is Yours is available on Steam, Epic Games Store
As discovered by PC Gamer, Scarface: The World Is Yours recently appeared on both Steam and the Epic Games Store as an upcoming release, though without a specific release date. The Steam page describes it as a “re-release of the original classic third-person open-world action game.” It also says that this version will have an “optional HD graphics mode (DLC)” and that it will allow players to “experience Tony Montana's explosive comeback in sharper detail than ever before.” The description goes on to say that the HD graphics mode is subject to change and that “further details will be announced at a later date.”
Of course, this isn't all that unusual – video game re-releases are a common occurrence – but there are several unexpected details that make this potential Scarface: The World Is Yours comeback more puzzling than expected. First, the current Steam and EGS pages label the game's publisher as EC Digital, a company that has no previous releases or any kind of footprint in the games industry. EC Digital themselves issued a statement on Steam following the surprise appearance of The world is yoursand claimed that a “technical issue” caused the game to go live on storefronts earlier than intended. The statement does little to shed light on the nature of the project itself, although it does mention third parties and “partners” involved in the alleged re-release.
Until more information emerges, it's hard to make head or tail of this windfall Scarface: The World Is Yours revival. The mystery surrounding EC Digital, only deepened by its opaque Steam statement, is the most confusing element in all of this: if EC Digital is proven to be a real, officially sanctioned entity, it could help establish the truth behind Scarface project.
