After my first years of games Dungeons and dragons 5th, I started dreaming about new classes for the system. I knew that earlier editions did not draw punching in this department, thanks to systems like prestige classes, so I wondered how 5E would approach the subject. Each version of the Artificer class initially scratched itching (and made intelligence more useful), but only temporarily. Enter Psion. Dungeons and dragons Revealing its first version of this class back in May 2025, and now there is an updated version with all types of adjustments, most of which make it stronger than ever.
Psion is similar Dungeons and dragons“Artificer Class in that they are both very flexible in terms of play style. Based on Byggvägen as a player, their psion can be a gish that exerts organic weapons, a public controller with telecommunications or a bard -like support that manipulates the dice rolls. Thought Psion was a good alternative to a magician or magician, this update is compelling reason to give it a chance.
If you are not interested in the Psion class update, give the new UA document a look anyway, as it also contains PlayTest versions of several new magic formulas.
Dungeons and Dragon's new psion class only gets stronger
For starters, the core class functions have improved in some significant ways. For example, psions now have 30 ft telepathy as standard rather than 5ft, which can make a big difference for stealth or social interactions. More importantly, the class is much more forgiving with the use of Psionic Energy Dice, thanks to some changes:
-
Multiple psionic disciplines are now only spending a psionic energy on whether the related D20 roll is a success, which preserves the player's resources unless it pays to use the ability
-
Psionic Restoration now obviously restores all the player's consumed psionic energy cubes after 1 minute meditation, rather than up to half of their maximum dice as part of a short rest
-
At later levels, the new Psionic Reserve feature ensures that players will always start fighting with at least four psionic energy cubes
These changes are very meaningful. The abbilites in the psion class require a lot of psionic Energy expenses, between disciplines and underclass functions. Now players are under less pressure to preserve dice for fear of running out. Speaking of, each subclass in this document also receives its own buffs:

You may notice that the teleporting theme PSI Warper-Class is not displayed in the new Psion document, but if you are a fan of this underclass, don't worry! Wizards of the Coast says it already got high brands in its first laptest, so when psion is published it will probably include PSI Warper with exactly the same features as before.
How the updated psion is compared to other D&D 2024E classes
All in all, these changes are improved to Psion's largest strengths: a wide range of building roads, a generous secondary resource and lots of built -in adaptation. This makes it a serious competitor to its immediate counterpart, Dungeons and dragons'Wizard, the only other intelligence full wheel. Wizards offers a lot of customization thanks to the pole book mechanic and a massive possible pole list, but they are still dependent on pole sites to use that adaptation to use, and are short at practical class functions at most levels. Psion's disciplines provide many powerful alternatives – both in battle and outside battle – which does not require a spell.
Wizard Dnd Is perhaps an even better comparison point. Metamagic enables the magician to compete with the psion's flexibility and adaptation, while sorcery points act as a secondary resource that drives powerful class and underclass functions. However, aspages have some discussionable weaknesses that Psionic Energy Dice lacks. Wizards must sacrifice spelling sites to regularly regain sorcery points, as opposed to the psion's completely independent dice. Psionic restoration is also better than magician reset in many situations, which restores more resources in a shorter period of time. The wizard's level 20 function seems stronger overall, but there is still a clear rivalry between these classes.
Psion is what it wants to be
Although psion is similar to magicians and magicians, fans of other classes should not disregard psion. It has many elements that make it an appealing alternative in many contexts. To name a few:
-
Psionic disciplines are a clear cousin to Warlock's Eldrritch Invocations and offers class adaptation and powerful abilities that define a character, both mechanically and in role play
-
Bards will be too familiar with the use of a pool of dice and can even use them to support the party in similar ways as bar counter inspiration while gaining access to a more aggressive list of magic formulas
-
Playing a metamorph psion offers a darker hold of the Druidens Shapeshifter -Fantasi
Based on this updated version, Psion should be in the conversation when you are considering playing a given Spellcaster class in Dnd. It is a solid jack-of-all-trading that does not make lots of sacrifices in exchange for its flexibility. I know I will consider playing a psion like my next Dnd Character, and you should too.
