It happens in an alternative reality

In this universe Paul Atreides was never born

When the story begins, players are introduced to a cutting scene where Paul Atreides explains how he imagines the universe and its many “roads”. Thanks to his powers like Kwisatz Haderach, Paul can see far into the future and the past for many branching realities. In one of these realities, Paul Atreides is never born, and instead Lady Jessica gives birth to a girl.

So the story starts again in a universe where Muad'dib never existed, and the fried is leaderless. This results in the mysterious disappearance of the inhabitants of Arrakis, in the midst of a cruel war for the spice's dominance between the Harkonnen and Atreides. From the moment that players arrive at Arrakis, the fact is made that the sandworm is a constant threat with the appearance of this animal trying to eat players and their persecutors: the emperor's Sardaukar army. In addition to these elite riders chasing them, there will be lots of small fractions made of forbidden, bandits, slaves and exiles, and these form the main element of the game.

But the sandworm itself is both immortal and unstoppable, and there is not just one. In the films, Paul Atreides was able to ride on the sandworm thanks to his mysterious connection to the spice and his talented nature. But players are not Kwisatz Haderach, and they are not the Messiah for Fremen (at least not at the moment), so they will not be able to ride on this gigantic animal and dominate their enemies. However, they can use thumps to keep them entertained when looking for the sand for hidden treasures, spice and other materials that can only be obtained where this animal roams.
