At tonight's Warhammer Skull's Showcase, Owlcat Games announced a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader.
The upcoming CRPG is titled Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy and is based on the table's role -playing play with the same name by the now completed Black Industries.
Far from powerful armies of man
Dark heresy is mainly in the Calixis sector within Segmentum Obscurus. These stories tend to focus on imperialist Inquisitors and their chosen acolytes and throne agents, which seems to be a good thematic fit for what Owlcat started in Rogue Trader, a game that throws the player in one of the most important roles in empire.
In dark heresy, as an acolyt of the Inquisition, you begin to investigate heretics deep in the Calixis sector. This sector is a vulnerable to empire because it is so far away from the majority of the military power of humanity. It is also known to be haunted, surrounded by sick omen and dark prophecies.
The trailer, which shoots game segments and kinematics, seems to be in Rogue Trader. If you were a fan of Owlcat's first crack at 40K, you will be happy to see the studio do more of the same in Dark Heresy.
There were several adventure modules and supplements that were published for Dark Heresy before the gaming workshop and Fantasy Flight Games (which acquired the license from Black Industries) ceased to work together in 2017. Dark Heresy seems to take inspiration from the table top, but not directly adapted any published works.
While the studio has already undertaken to develop a sequel, Owlcat is also not finished with Rogue Trader. The game's next extension, lex imperialis, was also announced. Enlargement will focus on adeptus arbites (arbitrators), while introducing new characters and companions.
Owlcat games have cut out a niche in the role play by exclusively creating CRPG, a beloved subgenre that does not always have mainstream appeal (Baldur's Gate 3 aside) but has a dedicated fan base.
Owlcat released Pathfinder: Kingmaker 2018, a sequel, Pathfinder: Wrath of the justice 2021 and Rogue Trader 2023. The company's partnership with Games workshop will continue with Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy.
