Strongest characters in One Piece Luffy underestimated

Although Luffy is already an extremely strong pirate, he may often end up underestimating his opponents. The main reason for this is simply because of how stubborn and hard Head Luffy is. He does not care too much about a person's reputation, all he wants is to kick their butt if they have acted unfairly and thought he is more than capable of taking them down with his own set of elastic Gomu Gomu abilities.

But there are several villains in A bit Story that would be strongly underestimated by Luffy, which resulted in some of his most degrading defeat in the entire series. Although Luffy and his crew would eventually succeed in defeating most of these abominable characters once and for all, it is fair to say that the captain of the straw hat never expected them to be as strong as they would be.

Aokiji

Although Long Ring Long Island is often seen by fans as an insignificant arc in history's large schedule, an important character that makes an official debut in this part of the action Aokiji is. At this point, Aokiji was still an Admiral, and after reuniting with Nico Robin and threatening to take her away, Luffy bravely rises and challenges Aokiji to a one-against-one struggle.

Magell

One of Luffy's most brutal defeat came to the hands of Magellan

Magellan, the head's prison guard for Impel Down, initially seemed like another dangerous opponent for Luffy to take down, but it soon becomes clear that he is much stronger than he releases. Magellan's devil fruit allows him to control and use poison, which he deplates during his first battle with Luffy to completely overwhelm him, leaving the Stråhatt captain in a rather miserable state, even though Luffy is more than prepared to take Magellan only a few seconds earlier.

Although he only appears in this bow, Magellan is still considered one of Lffy's toughest opponents to date. Luffy may have felt that he had what was required to handle Magellan as part of the prison's escape, so he never expected the fight to end with him being close to death lying in a pool of poison.

Luffy was not the only one who wanted to save Ace from being executed after he was handed over to the navy. Whitebeard, Aces captain and his entire fleet were also there to help, but when Luffy meets Whitebeard for the first time he does not seem to accept his help. In fact, Luffy Whitebeard tells us that it will be him who saves Ace and ignores Yonko's recommendation that he stays out of the way.

Soon after, however, Luffy is forced to admit Whitebeard's overwhelming strength after witnessing him causes an earthquake with a single place, thanks to his devil fruit. After the war finally ended, Luffy would reflect on Whitebeard's efforts in the war and respect his determination to try to save Ace in some way he could.

Rob Lucci

Luffy's first meeting with Luci did not go exactly as good

Although Luci's exact intentions are held a mystery at the beginning of the Water 7-arc, the truth is that he and his group are actually CP-0; Secret agents who perform the government's dirty work. Although Big Mom acts as the main villain on the whole of Cake Island, she actually makes her official debut much earlier in Fishman Island. After Luffy eats a bunch of candy that was promised to Yonko, he comes on a Det-Den-Mushi and starts Big Mothi, apparently does not care that she is known as one of the strongest pirates in the world, and is notorious to be a ruthless monster in Combat.

In classic Luffy -way, he is determined to take the fight for Big MOM when the crew violates the whole of Cake Island to save Sanji, but despite his training and abilities he can not even land a scratch on her. Thanks to her mastery of armament Haki, combined with her army of homies that always protects her, Big Mom proves too much for the straw hats to handle, and a much greater threat than Luffy initially realized.

Kaido

It's not long after entering Wano that Luffy realizes Kaido's real strength

When the straw hats sailed to Wano Kuni, their mission is clear; Take down Kaido and Orochi to free the country from their tyrannical rule. But as a Yonko who has been called “impossible” by large parts of the world, it was clear that nothing less than an army of extremely powerful soldiers would be needed to defeat Kaido, but despite the decision to charge his head first, not long after he was washed up in Wano.

Although he is completely prepared to prove his strength over Kaido, Luffy is completely humiliated by a devastating thunder Bagua, and this is only one of several times when Luffy was defeated by the monstrous Yonko.
