With the arrival of June 2026, we enter Pride montha period designed to celebrate LGBTQ+ representation and its history. While still relatively uncommon, video games featuring gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, or transgender characters no longer feel like outliers, which is a positive step forward. Many titles allow players to define their characters' gender, sexuality and more without restriction, while others actively explore same-sex or polyamorous romances.
As Pride Month kicks off, let's highlight some of the most iconic games ever synonymous with the LGBTQ+ community, even if they may not specifically explore the protagonist's sexuality and identity as major plot points. These are all great games that most people have probably played, but they definitely warrant a replay.

Baldur's Gate 3
The freedom to create, love and sleep with whoever you want
Baldur's Gate 3 demands a mention simply because it is one of the biggest RPGs of the 2020s, making it one of the biggest LGBTQ+ games of the decade. While not fully open world, Larian created the ultimate sandbox experience that allows players to create their own identities, which of course means giving them the freedom to decide who they love and lust after. BG3 strikes a great middle ground in its representation in that nothing pushes it to the fore or relegates it to a side quest; no, gay romance is, well, romance. Larian's approach is 100% normalization, allowing characters to express their sexuality without being defined by it.
Besides having the freedom to love and bed whom you want, BG3 allows players to create trans or non-binary characters if they wish. The creator separates the character's appearance from pronouns or voices, rather than forcing one to be tied to the other, and this mentality extends to their sexual anatomy and physical characteristics. Your characters can mix and match hairstyles, facial hair, makeup, etc., without restrictions.

7 best games to play if you like Baldur's Gate 3
These games will all appeal to BG3 fans with deep stories, powerful choices, and expansive worlds. Expect to make some tough decisions.
Celeste
The Definitive Trans Game Masterpiece
Celeste tells the most beautiful transsexual allegory in not only gaming but modern media. If someone were to ignore the story or subtext, they would find a fantastic precision platformer about a woman, Madeline, trying to climb a seemingly impossible mountain, along with a game that manages to be both punishing and fair. But a look beneath the surface reveals a powerful metaphor that reflects Madeline's anxiety, depression and fractured self-identity, the latter of which is manifested through the presence of her alter ego, Badeline. This journey struck a chord with tons of LGBTQ+ players who could relate to Madeline's struggles and fears.
In a mid-length essay, Maddy Thorson, Celestecreator, confirmed that Madeline is trans, along with connecting the character's journey with her own. The “Farewell” DLC also further cemented Madeline's story and trans status, turning what was subtext into just plain text. The trans identity of the game is not only limited to the writing, which Celeste also features a breathtaking, universally acclaimed synth-pop soundtrack composed entirely by Lena Raine, a trans woman who channeled her own experiences of anxiety directly into the project's musical DNA.
Hades
The definitive bisexual and polyamorous gaming masterpiece
Hades
- Released
-
September 17, 2020
Both Hades and its sequel fit this subject wholeheartedly, but the latter's relatively recent release makes me reluctant to attach the “iconic” label for now. However, Hades is a clear masterpiece that embraces bisexuality and polyamorous relationships, two aspects of LGBTQ+ that don't appear in fiction very often. Unlike BG3, which lets the players decide, Hades takes a much more open approach to defining the sexuality of its characters. Although Greek mythology is openly queer, modern interpretations do not often emphasize this aspect; however, Hades leans incurably into it.

Games with inclusive LGBTQ+ romance options
Games have become more inclusive with romance options over the years. These titles are some of the best for LGBTQ+ romance.
Canonically, Zagreus can date both Megaera and Thanatos at the same time, developing a polyamorous relationship built on trust and respect. This path doesn't lead to ultimatums or comedic punchlines, but rather a healthy end point for all three characters. Beyond Zagreus' story, Hades features a deeply gripping, central side-quest dedicated to reuniting the legendary Trojan war heroes Achilles and Patroklos.
Personally, Hades' representation of bisexuality took me completely by surprise, as I hadn't seen any other game present such a refreshing example.
The Sims, in general
25 years of representation
i chose The Sims 4 since it's the game most people play in 2026, but this post covers the entire series. From the very beginning, The Sims has always quietly allowed same-sex households, turning the franchise's universe into a haven for those seeking an escape from reality.
In the first few games, representation felt like a happy accident born out of the life sim's commitment to absolute player freedom, but Maxis gradually implemented changes that showed true dedication. Gender restrictions were removed from Create-a-Sim, allowing anyone to choose from any voice type, clothing style, hairstyle, walking animations, etc., with no restrictions. The Sims 4 eventually pronoun customization was also added, along with redefinition of attraction so that characters could have more defined boundaries.
The last of us part 2
Lesbian romance at the forefront
As divisive as it may be, The last of us part 2 is comfortably one of the most recognizable games with LGBTQ+ representation, and Naughty Dog handles Ellie and Dina's dynamic really well. Instead of just highlighting the beautiful moments, the game presents this relationship in all its raw realism, highlighting the messy emotions that arise from Ellie's obsessive journey. Although not the focus, Ellie's sexuality and experiences shape her identity, capacity for love, and perspective. LOU2 also introduces Lev, a trans person with a very complicated upbringing and history. Although he becomes a warrior to avoid being forced to marry an elder, his body dysmorphia goes way back and drove their transition.
Also, I can't end this article without mentioning The last of usThe “Left Behind” DLC, which essentially chronicles Ellie's awakening, all framed by a sweet day she spends with a girl named Riley. Honestly, I almost went with this instead LOU2but the latter is ultimately more iconic.
