On June 21, House of the Dragon is entering its third season, airing eight episodes on HBO and HBO Max. While Season 2 was a mixed bag, the sequel seems to have righted that ship by diving headfirst into all-out war, with trailers showcasing the terrifying scale of Westeros' legendary beasts. These creatures would immediately be classified as Elder Dragons i Monster Hunter.
As impressive as Vhagar or Caraxes appear on screen, they don't begin to compare to the massive creatures from another fantasy universe that George RR Martin helped shape: Fire Ring. FromSoftware's dark fantasy material operates on a whole other level of insanity, and that extends to the dragons, giants, and nightmares that roam The Lands Between. Let's just say, HOTDs dragons would mostly act as mini-bosses i Fire Ring.
Both A song of ice and fire / House of the Dragon and Fire Ring don't always specify the exact size of a creature, so we'll use estimates in most cases.
Elder Dragon Greyoll makes Vhagar look like a child
Greyoll is roughly twice the size of HOTD's largest living dragon
-
The largest LIVING dragon in HOTDVhagar, comes in at 90 meters, with a wingspan of 150 meters.
-
The largest LIVING dragon in Fire RingElder Dragon Greyoll, comes in at about 180 meters, with a wingspan of about 260 meters.
Fire Ring does not provide the exact dimensions of its NPCs and creatures, and some of them may appear smaller than they really are. Elder Dragon Greyoll serves as a perfect example, as her scale can be difficult to fully understand mid-game (especially since her movement causes Fire Ring to stutter). But as shown here in a brilliant video by the witch Zullie, the mother of dragons should be about 180 meters tall, which would mean that Greyoll is twice the size of House of the Dragonlargest dragon: Vhagar.

Best game that lets you hunt dragons
Few gaming moments compare to facing mighty dragons, and these titles are some of the best for such thrilling encounters.
Although Greyoll spends her time grounded and weakened by scarlet rot in the Caelid, her sheer biological mass is unmatched by any living fantasy creature on TV. If Vhagar tried to beat her down, she would look like a baby trying to peck at its mother. Greyoll wouldn't even have to move; a single status-reducing roar from her massive maw would completely shatter Vhagar's composure and bring her down.
The colossal dragon would swallow Balerion whole
Elden Ring's historical peak is much larger than HOTD's
-
EVER biggest dragon i A song of ice and fireBalerion the Black Dread, comes in at about 150 meters.
-
EVER biggest dragon i Fire RingThe Colossal Dragon, comes in at about 390 meters.
Wisely, Fire Ring and HOTD chose to confine their greatest dragons to the past rather than the present. According to George RR Martin's original books, Balerion the Black Dread was so monstrous that his jaw could swallow a woolly mammoth whole. A mighty behemoth born in Valyria and ridden by Aegon the Conqueror, his wingspan stretched so far that he would block out the sun and drown cities in darkness. He is the ultimate symbol of Westerosi devastation.
The colossal dragon in “Shadow of the Erdtree” is about 2.5 times the size of Balerion. The colossal dragon is so unfathomably large that its skull alone is the size of an entire Targaryen castle, and it would stomp on Balerion's skull without even noticing. Fire Ring shows much more of the colossal dragon than HOTD shows Balerion, when we actually get to see his rotting corpse at Dragon Communion's great altar. As you approach it, the absurd size of the beast gradually comes into focus, and it is truly astounding.

Elden Ring's Agheel is dramatically bulkier than HOTD's legendary karax seem common
Length isn't everything
-
Caraxe's size varies from the books and the show, but is assumed to be about half the size of Vhagar.
-
The Agheel is probably smaller than the Caraxe, but its bulky frame makes it appear larger.
Even more so than the previous dragons, the sizes of Carax and Agheel are difficult to determine, although they are both considerably smaller than the largest living dragons in their universe. Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm, is a legendary Westeros beast that served as Daemon's steed in the Dragon Dance.
Famous Caraxes fought Vhagar to a draw, an event known as the Battle Above the Gods Eye. This moment has not happened HOTD yet.
In terms of length, Caraxes appear to be taller than Flying Dragon Agheel, the first dragon most players encounter Fire Ring. As an early game boss, Agheel can be downright intimidating; but compared to later dragons he is comparatively small and unimpressive. If this entry-level dragon was released in Westeros, he would quickly achieve legendary status and become one of the most sought-after weapons of war. The Caraxes are a thin, noodle-necked snake built for agility, but the Agheel is a wall of muscle and thick armor plating. Although Caraxes matches or slightly exceeds him in sheer height, Agheel outweighs him by a huge margin.

Emeralds may be smaller than meleys, but only one of them uses magic
Size isn't everything… When magic is involved
-
Meleys, the Red Queen, is the fastest dragon in Westeros.
-
Smarag is probably smaller than Meley's, but he is powered by corpses of sorcerers.
Despite being only about half the height of Vhagar, Princess Alyssa and Rhaenys' Meleys are still one of the most feared dragons in Westeros. Heavy, brutal, and fast, the Red Queen essentially functions as a melee frame. She could hold her own against bigger beasts, and she is constantly one of the highlights of the HOTD.
For all intents and purposes, Smarag isn't that special as a dragon. For the most part, he's a medium-sized dragon that shouldn't really stand out from the crowd. But this do-getter discovered a taste for wizards, so he began devouring them. This diet caused Smarag to mutate and become affected by glitter stones found in his meals. Instead of standard leather and muscle, his scales have mineralized into spiky, magic-resistant Glintstone crystal armor.
Meleys is a powerhouse, but her blunt attacks can cause more self damage than actual damage. Smarag is also a mean dragon who won't hesitate to overwhelm opponents with breath attacks.
