Despite ongoing rumors, next Halo The game will not use generative AI in its development, according to a known Xbox and gaming industry insider on social media. The insider clarified that Xbox Game Studios currently has no mandate to use generative AI in Halo or other games. However, the controversial technology can still be used for emails and other tasks.
Even if Halo is one of Microsoft's cornerstone game series, hit FPS series has not seen any new releases since the launch of 2021's Halo infinite and the set Halo TV series. But rumors of a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved has been circulating on social media claiming that the first title in the franchise could make a return in some capacity with modern features and a sprint feature. As of this writing, Microsoft has said that fans are interested in the future Halo franchise should be set for the Halo World Championship 2025 on Friday, October 24 at the Seattle Convention Center.
Insider states Halo does not use generative AI
While previous reports indicated that PlayStation and Xbox could use generative AI in game development, an insider said that this will not be the case for the latter company. According to Xbox insider Jez Corden on Twitter, next Halo the game project does not use generative AI in its ongoing development or in any art assets. Corden stated that Xbox Game Studios has not mandated any of its subsidiaries to use generative AI in game development. However, Corden said Xbox's use of generative AI is likely limited to sending emails and other tasks unrelated to game development. Corden's post about Xbox Game Studios comes as a contrast to Microsoft's current push towards incorporating its own AI-based technologies. Apps like Copilot are included in Windows 11's user interface via operating system updates.
In response to Corden's tweet, another user responded that Microsoft may use procedural generation as an AI-based component of the Halo serial rather than generative AI in its development. Procedural generation is not a new concept to the gaming industry, as titles like Minesweeper and Minecraft use it to create levels of varying difficulty for players to enjoy. Procedural generation is also used in MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft to determine the loot players receive after defeating enemies in a dungeon or raid instance.
While major companies like Nintendo have shown no interest in using generative AI in games, Microsoft's use of it outside of game development remains a concern with users. Only time will tell what Microsoft's actual plans are for next Halo game.
