What is Canon's name in Persona 3 Reload

Quick links

Persona 3 Reload quickly gives players the option to name the main character after watching the opening sequence and the short journey through Iwatodai to the dorms. The name you choose to give him will be visible throughout the game, and cannot be changed later during a normal playthrough with your current settings except to start a new playthrough.

While the name will be seen quite often, it won't change any game mechanics, although it's also done very early in the game if you want to start over and change it before you get further into the game. While there is a lot of freedom to name the main character whatever you want, many players may want to use his canon name; here is which one is correct.

Which canon name is correct in Persona 3 Reload

There are two disputed canon names for Personas 3 Protagonist: Makoto Yuki and Minato Arisato. Although both names have some legitimacy to them, Makoto Yuki is the true canon name. This is found by starting a playthrough and changing the in-game language, which will bring up a message that defaults the main character's name to Makoto Yuki. This is also the name he is called by Persona 3 Dancing in the Moonlightwhich was developed by the same people who made the original game.

Makoto Yuki is also the name used for the main character during the anime film adaptations of the original game. Minato Arisato is also a viable name even though it only appears in the manga adaptationwhich mostly adapts the story exactly as it is but with some minor tweaks. Manganese is also not handled directly by Atlaswhich gives more weight to the second name over Minato.

Changing the in-game language after starting a playthrough can be used to change the main character's name to the canon name, and changing it back will revert to the name you initially chose.

Does the main character's name really matter?

The main character on the Iwatodai train

Overall, no the main character's name doesn't matter, and it won't change your experience anyway, based on what name you choose. Players are encouraged to use their own name and treat the protagonist as more of a self-insert character as he often has few lines of dialogue outside of those you can control. During cutscenes or voiceover dialogue, the main character will do it often referred to as “this guy” or “leader” when in Tartarusbecause there is no voice actor for any of the names you choose.
