What if the only survivor never woke up?

The almost 28-year-old Fall-out The series has long been known for its RPG mechanics and the ability for players to influence the post-apocalyptic wasteland in drastic ways. From Fallout 1Vault Dweller who potentially saves Vault 13 with a new water chip or abandons its residents to suffer from slow deaths, Fall-out Series have consistently allowed player choices to dictate the direction for their games stories. This can be seen even in Bethesda's modern Fall-out titles, such as players who choose to either support or release Harold in Fallout 3. Despite these choices and alternative results, most Fall-out Games and scenarios eventually get canon endings for sequels. But an interesting scenario that would affect the wasteland would greatly be if the only survivor never woke up in Fallout 4.

Fallout 3 Designer discusses potential remaster

A former Bethesda developer discusses what he hopes to see in a remaster from Fallout 3, after the success of Oblivion Remastered.

Fallout 4's only survivor explained

Unlike any other main lines Fall-out game, Fallout 4 Begins in the late 2000s just before the Great War begins in 2077. Here the only survivor, their husband and their infant son Shaun quickly begins to the nearby vault 111 after core bombs begin to sink near their home in New England. Shaken by the sudden destruction of their home and millions of death, the only survivor and their family is rapidly unknowingly escorted to Cryo Pods by Vault 111 staff. For about 200 years, the only survivor and the rest of the frozen residents of Vault 111 remained relatively secure until the institute's forces carved into the vault, kidnapped Shaun and killed the only surviving spouse and the rest of the frozen vaults.

Decades later, an adult Shaun, now released the leader of the institute called Father, released the only survivor to eventually meet them and encourage them to take their place as the institute's leader. Before the only survivor met his son, they inevitably encountered members of the minute, Brotherhood of Steel, and the railway and at the same time supported several settlements, including their old neighborhoods in Sanctuary Hills. From here, the only survivor could either support the Brotherhood, the Institute, the Minute or the Railway to dominate the Commonwealth, with most fractions that eventually became hostile to the only survivor based on their supporting measures against a certain fraction.

The only survivor's influence beyond the Commonwealth

No exact public for Commonwealth for the only survivor has been confirmed, although it is suggested that either pages with the Brotherhood or the Minuts based on Prydwenappearance in amazons Fall-out show. The appearance of the airship in the show can suggest that both the institute and the railway have been destroyed, which makes synthetic people effectively a threatened “species”. Anyway, the only survivor eventually goes to Father Harbor, Maine, where they either support or prevent the documents from Synth Dima. Later, they will also travel to Västra Massachusetts to either liberate the Nuka world from Raider Control or the USURP Leadership of the Raiders, which ensures that the once happy amusement park remains a post-apocalyptic engine of chaos.

Nate, the male single survivor of Fallout 4is a veteran of the Chinese-American war while Nora, the female only survivor, worked as a lawyer before the Great War.

Society without the only survivor

But what happens if the institute's staff chose to kill all residents in Vault 111, including the only survivor, when the kidnapping Shaun. This event would forever change the fate of the Commonwealth and the future of Fall-out universe. As for the Brotherhood, the only survivor was included in the Brotherhood's presence in the Company primarily with the rescue of Paladin Dance. Without the only survivor who comes around to save Dance and contact PrydwenBrotherhood may never have appeared in Commonwealth or at least would not appear as soon as they did in Fallout 4. Danse and his remaining squad members would probably have died in the Commonwealth without the only surviving help, which possibly left their real fate as a synth ever unknown.

Unlike the only surviving impact on the Brotherhood, the minute would probably never have recovered without the help of the Vault 111 inhabitant. After the Quincy massacre, the Minuts were already extinguished except Preston Garvey, which was the last remaining active minute man. If the only survivor never left Vault 111, Garvey would probably have died in the Museum of Freedom, Sanctuary Hills would have remained a ruin, and the minute would have faded away in history. Without the inspiring influence of the only survivor as the minute's new general, most settlements in the Commonwealth would have remained defenseless and relaxed.

The institute reigns the highest without the only survivor

Ironically, without the appearance of the only survivor, the institute may have continued to secure a dominant foothold in the Commonwealth and possibly beyond. Shaun would still die of old age, but the institute would probably have returned to choosing its own leader instead of Father pressing that the only survivor would affect the fraction. Without the survivor of the surface world, the institute would continue its systems to replace figure heads with synthesis and manipulate events for its own purposes, probably including the destruction of the railway, minute residues, raider collective, super-mutaneous and invading brotherhood forces. This can eventually lead to a safe joint in the Fall-out the universe, but one that is constantly threatening to be replaced or attacked by synths.
