Throughout your time in Starfieldyou'll often be hopping between planets during missions, whether you need to do so for said mission, looking for a place to build an outpost, or just exploring and gaining XP to do so.

Previously, all you could do was fast travel from place to place, which saves a ton of time, but it leaves out all of the actual interstellar travel. Now, with the introduction of Cruise Mode, you can sail the stars in your chosen ship without going past everything, meeting people on their own journeys and even helping them out sometimes.
What is Cruise Mode?
As part of the Free Lanes update, a new form of transport is available to you while in space, known as Cruise Modeand you can enter this mode with L1 if using PS, LB on Xbox or T if using a PCwhile orbiting any planet.
During Cruise Mode you can roam around at lower speeds and has Free Lane Encountersas well as see any nearby points of interest on the planet and interact with them at your leisure.
It is unlocked when you complete the prologue, One Small Stepwhich sees you gain access to the Frontier as your first ship and have the ability to fly to other planets and locations freely.
When in cruise mode, you can control your speed and direction normallyas well as using Boost Mode and fly to your destination manually.
If you don't want to fly alone but still want to use the more scenic route you can use the Autopilot optionwhich is activated when looking towards a destination and select R1 on PS, RB on Xbox or space bar on PC.
Autopilot preventing you from overshooting your destination and also gives you the chance to walk around your shiptalk to your followers, or do some crafts during the trip.
What are Free Lane Encounters?
Of get close to nearby shipsyou can hail and talk to people to trade itemswhich gives you the chance to sell items and buy various resources on the go, few knowledge and tips through conversation, or come across various activities that reward exp and itemssuch as having to rescue a ship in distress due to the training instructor having a medical emergency.
Trading ships in cruise mode is a great way to get tons of different resources if you don't feel like farming them or don't have an outpost set up for a specific itemas the majority of ships have at least one or two items in decent quantities.
You can too engage in piracy with Cruise Mode if you choose a more criminal lifestyle for your character, which you can chooses to attack a ship after hailing the.
This can backfire and cause a big fight if you are not prepared, however, as committing piracy will alert nearby shipsespecially from factions like the Freestar Alliance.
