Warzone will soon be unplayable for millions of players

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the Call of Duty: Warzone turns off. Call of Duty: Warzone was released in 2020 and was hugely successful during the covid-19 pandemic. The game took the concept of a Call of Duty BR to new heights and is quite easily one of the most popular battle royale games ever made.

Unfortunately, Call of Duty: Warzones popularity has waned, as has the popularity of all BR games to some degree. It has been all kinds of controversial War zone updates released over the years, with perhaps the most disliked being the removal of the original Verdansk map. Verdansk was later taken back and removed again, which has upset some fans.

Call of Duty: Warzone just added a feature fans have wanted for years

Call of Duty: Warzone developer Raven Software is adding a feature that battle royale fans have been asking the studio to add for years now.

Call of Duty: Warzone ditches PS4 and Xbox One

The next big controversial Call of Duty: Warzone change is just around the corner. It has been confirmed by Activision Call of Duty: Warzone will be removed from download on PS4 and Xbox One starting June 4th. The game will remain playable on PS4 and Xbox One until the start of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1. A specific start date for Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 has yet to be revealed, but we do know that the game launches on October 23rd, so PS4 and Xbox One players can expect to lose access to War zone before the end of the year, probably in late October or early November.

Even though the PS4 and Xbox One are 13 years old at this point, there are still millions of gamers who use them as their primary consoles and have yet to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for whatever reason. And with video game consoles becoming more expensive than ever before, it can be especially frustrating for Call of Duty: Warzone players still on PS4 and Xbox One that they will lose access to the game. However, it will be the best for War zone in the long run.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 preview

This way, War zone can start taking full advantage of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware and not be held back by the limitations of PS4 and Xbox One. War zone trenching PS4 and Xbox One coincide with Call of Duty finally moving on from the older hardware, with Modern Warfare 4 also skips last generation consoles. We're six years deep into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era, so for many fans, look out Call of Duty fully embracing the newer consoles is something that has been a long time coming.

Still, those who have yet to upgrade from PS4 and Xbox One will be disappointed. Various other live service games have announced plans to move on from PS4 and Xbox One, and Sony itself has confirmed that PS4 is no longer a priority for PlayStation Plus. The PS4 had an incredible run and a lifespan that is virtually unprecedented, but it's definitely time for the industry to fully focus on the PS5 and other newer platforms. It will definitely be interesting to see how War zone and Call of Duty developing with PS4 left in the past.
