Over at OpenCritic, Assassin's Creed Black Flag resync has a Top Critic Average of 86 and a recommendation score of 94%. Anonymous sources familiar with the internal performance Assassin's Creed Black Flag resync reportedly told Insider Gaming that the game was “very successful,” at least in terms of pre-release interest and pre-orders. Despite this early success and the game's very positive critical reception, anonymous sources affected by these Ubisoft layoffs told Insider Gaming that the layoffs felt “premeditated” and would happen regardless Black flag the critical or commercial performance of the remake.
These developers felt this way because Ubisoft Barcelona had not been assigned a new project before Assassin's Creed Black Flag resyncs launch. According to these developers, it is common for Ubisoft higher ups to assign new projects to studios long before their current projects have shipped. However, despite the studio expressing concern that it did not have another project lined up for the summer of 2025, it was never given a new assignment. An event to celebrate Ubisoft Barcelona shipping Assassin's Creed Black Flag resynced is also said to have been canceled and replaced by a small office celebration.
An anonymous source affected by the latest wave of layoffs from Ubisoft provided the following statement to Insider Gaming:
“These layoffs coincide with the broader context of ongoing workplace issues. This is not an isolated incident; it reflects a pattern of persistent mistreatment, loss of talent, forced resignations as a result of the erosion of workers' rights, and an increasingly top-down management culture that leaves employees with little voice in decisions that affect their work.”

Unfortunately, it's far from the first layoffs to hit Ubisoft's staff this year alone. Back in February, the Splinter cell Remake studio Ubisoft Toronto was hit with layoffs affecting at least 40 employees. Then Ubisoft-owned Red Storm Entertainment had its own layoffs in March, reportedly eliminating over 100 developers and effectively canceling a total of 10 games that were in various stages of development.
