It was said to grant miracles to the people living nearby. When Juushiro Ukitake was three years old, he was dying of a chronic lung disease he had been born with, and his parents prayed to Mimihagi to save him. Moved by the boy's inherent kindness and good heart, Mimihagi agreed to save his life. It fused with Ukitake and took his internal organs in exchange for keeping him alive and keeping his disease at bay. This allowed Ukitake to live a very long life and become a soul reaper.
