Square Enix had a perfect opportunity to tackle it long in development Kingdom Hearts 4but fans have once again left waiting for all kinds of news about the game. Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced back in 2022, but details about the game have been slim ever since. It has been more than seven years Kingdom Hearts 3 was released, although fans have grown accustomed to waiting long periods between numbered entries in the series.
The wait for the game got a little harder last year, then Kingdom Hearts Missing Link was canceled by Square Enix. The news wasn't entirely surprising, given the number of delays and canceled beta tests, but the game would have at least given fans something to play while they waited Kingdom Hearts 4.

Square Enix has released its latest financial results, and publishers often use that opportunity to provide status updates on upcoming games. Unfortunately, Kingdom Hearts 4 received no mention, which may suggest that the game is still far from release. It's impossible to tell how far along the development is, but it's certainly not a good sign that the game isn't discussed much by the company.

Fans of the series are clinging to any hope of news or any kind of announcement. Kingdom Hearts 4 fans thought the Tokyo Game Show teased an announcement earlier this month, but that tease didn't seem to work either. It's still possible that the game could appear at Tokyo Game Show in August, or at Summer Game Fest, or one of the other big shows that will take place over the next few months. Until there's some sort of proof of that happening, though, fans have no reason to get too excited.
At this point, only one trailer has been revealed for Kingdom Hearts 4. That's basically all fans have had to go by for the past four years, and there's been no indication of what worlds players will be able to visit in the game. Disney has no shortage of candidates to choose from, including some movies that have become popular in the time between games. For example, Zootopia was relatively new when Kingdom Hearts 3 came out, but the series has since become a global success story. A world based on Star Wars also seems to be a distinct possibility.

Video game development takes a lot of time. It's an unfortunate reality of the industry and it means fans often have to wait long periods between games of their favorite franchises. Kingdom Hearts 4 was once rumored for a 2026 release, but that seems incredibly unlikely now, unless Square Enix has a big surprise in store. At this point, everyone Kingdom Hearts fans can do is hope that the time spent on development will be worth it, and the finished product lives up to the hype. Since the original game was released, Kingdom Hearts has become a truly beloved series, with fans all over the world. A game that's released before it's finished isn't going to make anyone happy.
