The Legend of Zelda movie gets a new release date

Following The Super Mario Galaxy Movies big wins at the international box office, Nintendo is on a hot streak with its movies. The Legend of Zelda the film was announced in November 2023, when it was revealed that Nintendo would be working with Sony Pictures to bring the film to life. Unlike Super Mario animated movies, The Legend of Zelda The film is planned to be a live-action production, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda.

In typical Zelda fashion, live-action The Legend of Zelda the film was originally scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, before being delayed to May 7, 2027. As of May 13, 2026, The Legend of Zelda the film has received yet another release date update. In a rare twist of fate, however The Legend of Zelda the film will now be released earlier than the projected May 2027 release date.

The Legend of Zelda's release date has been moved from May 7, 2027 to the end of April

The creator of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto took to X to announce Zelda the film's new release date. Thanks to the hard work of the production team, the release date of the film has been postponed to and The Legend of Zelda the movie is now releasing on April 30, 2027 – a full week earlier than the planned May release date.

The Legend of Zelda the film will be directed by Wes Ball, the director of Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apeswith a script written by Derek Connolly (Pokemon Detective Pikachu) and TS Nowlin (Maze Runner trilogy). Ball previously described Zelda film as “the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie” and the movie was shot in New Zealand, kind of like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All signs pointing towards Zelda the film is Nintendo's cinematic magnum opus when it's released next May.

Zelda has a history of delays

What does The Legend of Zelda The film's new release date is particularly interesting is how much of a history the series has for delays. Delaying the film a second time would be par for the course, but getting delayed is a whole other story. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was originally scheduled for release in 1997 before being pushed into 1998. Twilight Princess would be released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube, before receiving a Nintendo Wii makeover that pushed the game into 2006.

A leaker claims that there is a new Legend of Zelda game in the works in addition to the rumored Ocarina of Time remake, and that it could come out in 2027.

Skyward sword was originally supposed to be released in 2010, but was then moved to 2011 and released at the end of the Nintendo Wii's life cycle instead. Breath of the Wild suffered several delays, having been slated for a 2015 release only to come out in March 2017. The tears of the kingdom was also delayed a full year after development was completed, just so Nintendo could refine the game's quality even further. The fact that Zelda the movie being pushed up a whole week is a sign that Nintendo is very confident in its live-action adaptation of the series.
