Given the unique mechanics of NCSoft's latest MMO, it's no surprise that those unfamiliar with the massive PvP of Throne and Liberty will need all the help they can get, whether it's through the highly customizable builds, powerful skills and flashy weapons – or through one of the game's more unique mechanics, Guardians.

Guardian is an ultimate ability within Throne and Liberty and can quickly turn battles around. After players complete the “Sacred Pledge of Blood – Pledge Loop” in Chapter 5, they unlock the ability to transform into various powerful creatures that have been defeated during their journey. Each of these Guardians comes with their own unique passives and buffs, whether it's turning their pain into power or simply turning invisible after each kill. These transformations each last thirty seconds and have a hefty ten minute cooldown with them – so making sure players get the most out of their Guardian picks is imperative for PvP.

7 Masked Warlock Dantalux

There is no real need for it

This Guardian suffers from a sad lack of purpose. Although he targets magic-based skills and his buff is double that of a party member's allies – Mana is rarely a problem enough to warrant an entire Guardian dedicated to its recovery.

For PvP players, it's beneficial to their allies – but the lack of any versatility in its offensive and defensive capabilities makes the overly cool Masked Warlock Dantalux little more than a simple fashion-based upgrade. Looking cool for 30 seconds is great, but not necessary for PvP.

6 Brutal warrior Valkarg

Battles against groups

The main problem with Valkarg is that his ability is only really effective against one enemy. The thirty seconds that players get to use their Guardians abilities isn't enough for this Brutal Warrior to really do that much damage.

He can be very effective against an enemy. Nevertheless, their refueling capacity is far superior. If players don't level their health properly, they can be immediately squashed by the enemy team before they can take advantage of the stacked damage-to-attack ability.

5 Vampire Slayer Ezekiel

Reliable, just not exceptional

This is the first guardian given to the player in Throne and Liberty's story. He's well rounded, and his buffs sound nice – but they fall short. The leech effect is useful for restoring some of that health in more desperate situations, but the damage is severely lacking.

There are many Guardians out there who can do what Ezekiel does, but much better. There is no real PvP situation where Ezekiel's buffs are incredible, but as a Tank – he can be very useful. The extra defense boost is nice, and the easy health rebuild can help take care of some of those beefy player combos – just try to stay out of the way of the more “lethal” attacks.

4 Pale Nemesis Hartach

Perfect for those sneaky ninja builds

This guardian excels in PvP games, especially when fielding various low health players. While contextual, knowing when to pop this Guardian and effectively weave in and out of an invisible state with a guaranteed critical hit is extremely potent.

While he lacks versatility, and Hartach is definitely better suited to double-edged, crit-based builds – his potential is huge. In the right hands, this ability is great for taking down one player at a time, thinning the pack from the outside of big skirmishes.

3 Shade Revenant Stheno

Ridiculous damage output

Shade Revenant Stheno completely melts the health bars of all surrounding enemies. This ability is obviously greatly enhanced if the player is in a one-on-one encounter where multiple projectiles can repeatedly knock down their enemy.

Perfect for quick and close range builds, switching to this Guardian form is perfect for taking large chunks of health from players. When timed correctly, the transformation can lead to devastating yet satisfying gigs. It's always best when grouped with a staff-focused player who can throw some beefy AoE attacks to really ramp up the havoc.

2 Lady Knight Kamarshea

Insanely strong shield

Ideal for tanking, the long lasting shield combined with the increased cooldown rate can really turn the tables on those surrounded. Whether this Guardian is used as a desperate last stand, or to immediately enter a stacked fight with the added boost – Lady Knight Kamarshea can turn pretty much any situation to her advantage.

While there isn't much to offer in terms of extra offensive abilities – the upsides are just too good to pass up. From saving herself to saving her team, Kamarshea excels ideally in large-scale PvP combat and is consistently reliable in her extreme defensive abilities.

1 Green Ranger Elowen

It's not even close

It's hard to deny that this Guardian is the current meta in Throne and Liberty's PvP. Usually best saved for short-range damage in crowds, the constant binding of large groups of enemy players, combined with the increased critical hit, is incredibly potent on the battlefield.

There is no real downside to Elowen, and the community is expecting some kind of nerf for this Guardian in the near future, given how capable she is. The five second bond is great when coordinated among an effective group of players and can literally get through most fights with confidence.
