Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will have some “Deep Cut” characters

Important takeaways

  • Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will feature new characters, and some of them will be “deep cuts” in the franchise's history.
  • Fans have speculated which characters Keegan-Michael Key is referring to.
  • There have been some wild guesses.

Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will feature additional characters beyond the ones we've already seen, and according to Toad's voice actor Keegan-Michael Key, the expansive history of the Mario franchise will be explored in more depth in the upcoming sequel (thanks, GamesRadar+).

“One thing I can say about the second movie is that it's a little bit broader in scope, and where it takes place is very exciting to me,” Key told Men's Journal. “They're going to find some really great Easter eggs and it's been very exciting so far.”

“I feel like what they've done creatively is they've really expanded the universe that these characters live in and we're going to meet some new people. We're going to meet some new people that are old favorites and some people that I think are really deep cuts, but because of how the story is right now, those characters are going to be very exciting,” Key added.

How obscure is a deep cut?

It seems unlikely that the characters Key is referring to are incredibly obscure. That said, the actor has shown impressive knowledge of some of the franchise games he's been involved with, so it certainly wouldn't be out of character for Key to have a broad knowledge of Mario lore. Either way, his comment has sparked much speculation as to which characters he may be referring to.

The range of fan speculation for these “deep cuts” is very wide, from well-known characters like Rosalina, Toadsworth, and Toadette, all the way to obscure characters with appearances like Tatanga and infamous New York entrepreneur Anthony Scapelli.

We've got our own list of obscure Mario characters for those looking for some fuel for their delusions, and I think Kylie Koopa has a real chance of appearing on screen. We know that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is no stranger to Easter eggs and cameos, as Swanky Kong even made an appearance in the first film.

We'll probably have to wait and see to find out which characters Key is referring to. Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will be released on April 3, 2026.
