Street Fighter 6 Patch makes Alex's marriage to his stepsister a little less weird

Last month, the beloved character Alex was added to Street Fighter 6, along with a related World Tour story where we learned more about the professional wrestler's background and personal life. The details were…surprising, to say the least.

To catch you up: Alex is an orphan who is taken in by his late father's friend and trainer, Tom. After the death of Alex's parents, Tom essentially becomes his adopted father. It's all of the above, but then Tom and his wife have a daughter named Patricia. Alex and Patricia grew up together, making them step-siblings, more or less. Later in life, the couple gets married.

Cousin-Sister-Wife

It's already a questionable premise, since the pair are basically brother and sister, but then a twist reveals that Tom was a cousin of Alex's mother, meaning they're also biologically related. The couple then have a child of their own, completing the Habsburg circle.

Some have theorized that Tom is related to Alex's mother because it is unusual in Japan for people who are not biologically related to the orphan to adopt them. This can be seen in the popular film Suzume, where the eponymous character is adopted by her aunt after her mother's death.

Capcom then apologized for the action and promised to adjust the dialogue in some languages. Well, that note has arrived, and it hasn't exactly made the plot any less weird. According to Capcom, “some of Alex's World Tour story text has been adjusted in some languages.”

Instead of Alex explicitly saying that Tom is his mother's cousin, he instead says, “[Tom] is a distant relative of my mother, or something.” So… the biological connection between Alex and Patricia is now more questionable, which is a plus… I guess? Capcom could have completely changed the plot, and no one would have batted an eye, but the studio seems intent on maintaining some kind of biological connection between Tom and Alex's mother.

So, unfortunately for fans of Alex, he will remain in his loving relationship with his cousin-sister in the canon of the series. At least Alex isn't appearing in the upcoming Street Fighter movie, so we don't have to deal with this issue in theaters… yet.
