Steam users have until May 17th to play the 2026 Fantasy RPG for free

Steam users have until May 17 at 10:00am PT/1:00pm ET to download and play the underrated 2026 fantasy RPG, GreedFall: The Dying World. However, it's worth noting that this is part of Steam's Free Weekend promotion, not Steam's Free-to-Keep promotion, meaning users will only be able to play it until that date, but a hefty discount comes with this promotion as well.

Unfortunately, this is less of an introduction and more of a farewell. GreedFall: The Dying Worldalso known as GreedFall 2fully released in March 2026 after some time in Early Access. The game never really gained much momentum, and not long after that Nacon liquidated developer Spiders. For those not in the know, not only did the Spiders release both GreedFall game, but it also worked Bound By Flame, The Technomancerand SteelRising.

Following Steam's recent Free-to-Keep promotion of a 2025 Survivors -like game, Nacon's GreedFall 2 has entered a free weekend promotion. The difference is simple: Free-to-Keep promotions give PC users a free game forever, as long as it's picked up at a certain time, and a Free Weekend game is only available to play for free until the end of the promotion period. As such, anyone who wants to check out the fantasy RPG can do so at no cost until May 17 at 10:00am PT/1:00pm ET. There's also a 30% discount when you buy it between now and May 27, bringing the game to $35.

GreedFall 2 is subtitled Dying World because it is not a traditional sequel, but a prequel to the original GreedFall. You don't need to play the original to play this as it takes place entirely before that. In it, you become a Teer Fradee native who is kidnapped and taken to the old continent where, along with a handful of companions, players must fight their way home (among other more spoilery details). Overall, for fans who were curious about the old continent, it provides a great insight into the world that fans hear about a lot in the first one. The first game was hailed as reminiscent of BioWare's golden years, but the sequel largely failed to live up to those expectations in terms of critical success.

GreedFall 2 reviews on MetaCritic give it a 63 Metascore, indicating mixed or average reviews, and Steam reviews similarly list it at 62% positive, placing it in the Mixed category. Broadly speaking, it's more of an old-school hardcore CPRG than an action RPG, and while it had great lore, a stunning setting, and clear RPG ambitions, its combat, gameplay, and overall performance suffered badly. That said, free is free and there will be an ongoing discount for it this month. If it appeals to you, it's hard to pass up picking it up at a discount.

While the context surrounding GreedFall 2the release is incredibly unfortunate, and there's really no substitute for the studio being active, it's a great way to pay tribute to Spiders for playing their last game.
