For 25 years, people all over the world have been happily entertained by the crazy adventures of the fungus that lives in a pineapple under the sea, Spongebob Squarepants. Over 300 episodes of the hit Nickelodeon animated series have told the story of the underwater chef and his friends, but Spongebob Squarepants' adventures were not limited to television. Several movies, television spinoffs, stage adaptations, books, comics, and, of course, video games have kept people fascinated by the snail-eating fungus over the years. However, video games based on the world of SpongeBob just seemed to decline dramatically in the 2010s. That was until the surprise release of several SpongeBob games in the early 2020s, including one announced for 2025.

SpongeBob SquarePants future in video games
While SpongeBob's recent return to video games has been a mixed bag overall, that hasn't stopped jellyfish fishing fans from being the star of upcoming games. In a recent trailer, a sequel to THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios' Cosmic Shake was teased and seemingly completed a trilogy that began with Rehydrated. Little information is known about this upcoming Spongebob game, but it has a release date of 2025. It is expected that this game will be a third-person platformer and will play similarly to both Rehydrated and Cosmic Shake. Only a few clips of the game were shown, showing SpongeBob walking around as a skeleton and as his normal self in the dark deep sea city of Rock Bottom.
As for the story, this new Spongebob Squarepants the game appears to feature the Flying Dutchman Ghost as the main antagonist, as he is seen repeatedly during the trailer. The trailer was also titled an “Official Halloween Gaming Trailer” and contains many spooky scenes, so having the Flying Dutchman as an antagonist would work. A mysterious pink portal opens and pulls buildings and buses into it, seemingly striking residents with lightning. Bosses from previous games also appeared such as Squidward turning into a giant octopus and Miss Shell as a witch. Both SpongeBob and Patrick appear as little ghosts at the end of the trailer, and they will probably need to use these forms to help save Bikini Bottom again.
