Snake Eater Remake was made for younger generations

Important takeaways

  • Because as iconic and important as Metal Gear Solid is, many younger gamers are simply not familiar with the series.

  • That's part of the reason why Konami is remaking Metal Gear Solid 3 in the form of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

  • The game is being developed with younger generations of players in mind, ones who may not be as familiar with who Snake is.

When it comes to video game characters, few are as iconic as Metal Gear Solid's Snake. But for as iconic as Snake is, not many gamers, especially younger gamers, are familiar with the series he's a part of. In other words, no, Snake is not from Super Smash Bros., although it would be pretty cool if he was.

It is with that lack of familiarity in mind that Konami chose to remake Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. According to producer Noriaki Okamura, part of the purpose of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is actually to introduce younger players to Snake and the larger world of Metal Gear.

Snake hasn't played a game in almost a decade

In an interview with GamesRadar, Okamura confirmed that many young gamers are simply not familiar with the larger Metal Gear franchise, which prompted the creation of Delta: Snake Eater. “One of the things that really drove us to do the remake in general is because we realized that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren't familiar with the Metal Gear franchise anymore,” he said.

It might be hard to believe, given how important Metal Gear is to gaming as a whole, but it makes sense. The last Metal Gear game was The Phantom Pain in 2015, and until Master Collection Vol. 1, previous games were not available.

As a result, the upcoming Delta: Snake Eater is being built with future generations in mind, according to Okamura. “It was basically our mission, our duty, to kind of continue to make sure that the series lives on for future generations.” he added. “After all, we leave behind a lot more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say – but then again, who is Solid Snake?”

And if there was any confusion about starting with Snake Eater as opposed to the original MGS, Okamura noted the importance of starting chronologically. “That's where the original story started,” he concluded. Hopefully, once Delta: Snake Eater releases, younger gamers will be able to appreciate its importance to the industry, just as Konami intends. And hopefully this is the start of more Metal Gear releases.
