Silksong is likely to move the series past Metroid's lifetime sales

Not only is Hollow Knight: Silksong actually comes, but it will be here in just over a week. The sequel will sell millions of copies, perhaps even more than the original. If it will even achieve it, it will move the Hollow Knight series lifetime sales in addition to the combined sales of each Metroid game ever.

Hollow Knight and Metroid are both Metroidvanias, a genre that got its name after the Samus-led Nintendo flagship series. As highlighted by the gaming company Christopher Dring, if Silksong performs well on the sales front, which is almost guaranteed, the series will have sold more copies than every game in the Metroid franchise together. It is even though there are 17 Metroid games so far and only two hollow knights.

Team Cherry recently told Bloomberg that the original Hollow Knight has sold 15 million copies. I can imagine that the number has gone up again since they quoted that number, as more people have been flocking to OG since last week's silksong news, a sales nail that led to the game smashing their simultaneous players on Steam. By comparison, the best-selling Metroid game Metroid Dread is the first game in the series to sell the three million the three million.

The original Metroid Prime and the very first Metroid game, released in NES 1986, is in second and third place, which was sold north of two million copies each, and the fantastic super Metroid, which is considered one of the best games ever made by a lot of people, sold only 1.42 million copies. When you summarize the sale of all 17 games in the franchise, you get 21.45 million.

Not to rub salt in the wounds, especially as someone who would put Metroid Dread up there among their favorite games ever, but there are six million fewer copies that were sold than Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

All this means that if Silksong is even half as well as the original hollow knight, the Indie series' two games will conveniently sell Metroids 17. It is not even to report the original game's continued sale, and let's be honest, given how much silk song has been desired, its lifetime.

There is hope for Metroid in what feels like a battle that it is inevitably losing against Hollow Knight, and it comes in the form of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The long-awaited Metroid game should have a release date every day now, and the expectation of it would make you think it will sell pretty well. Maybe even better than Metroid Dread, but probably nowhere near Hollow Knight's number.
