This allows Emilia and Julius to battle Reid Astrea, the perverted yet powerful examiner for the second exam. Passing the Sword Saint's trial is Team Subaru's current priority, but achieving it is far from easy.

The power of Reid Astrea
Unfortunately, the difficulty of the second trial pales in comparison to the previous exam that Subaru Natsuki managed to conquer on her own. This time, Subaru's group must find the courage within to defeat Reid Astrea, an ancient swordsman with deep ties to Reinhard Van Astrea, the current Sword Saint and one of the strongest characters in Re:Zero.
Armed only with a pair of chopsticks, Reid Astrea stands in the way of Subaru's group, blocking their path with overwhelming arrogance and confidence. As much as Subaru wants to take the lead as he often does, Julius Juukulius draws the Heavenly Sword to face Reid in a one-on-one duel.
What happens next is an intense clash of steel meets stick, and the entire battlefield is instantly consumed by the sheer pressure of Julius and Reid's solo fight. Obviously, Reid is far superior to Julius, and even with nothing more than a pair of chopsticks in hand, he hands Julius a humiliating defeat. Even after Anastasia hits Reid with light magic, the latter remains completely unfazed, even going so far as to cut through the light itself with just her chopsticks.

Emilia wins a victory for Team Subaru
Outwit the sword saint's wild side
With Julius Juukulius lying unconscious, Emilia steps forward to take on Reid Astrea next. The atmosphere changes slightly, becoming more light-hearted, as Reid shows a particular fondness for beautiful girls. Recognizing the power disparity between them, Emilia challenges Reid to a simple contest in hopes of leveling the playing field in her own way. This proves to be a smart move, allowing Emilia to handle Reid without relying solely on brute force.
When Reid moved even a single step from his position, it would instantly count as Emilia's victory. Just like that, Emilia unleashes a barrage of ice-based magical attacks, summoning sharp ice swords in rapid succession to overwhelm Reid. The entire fight scene is a sight to behold, with Emilia's beautifully animated ice magic transforming the plain meadows into a dazzling display of frozen artistry. Fortunately, Emilia emerges victorious, as Reid Astrea is ultimately distracted by her own antics, leaving an opening that she successfully exploits to secure victory.
Julius Juukulius wants a third chance

Inspired by Subaru Natsuki's never-give-up attitude, Julius Juukulius confronts Reid Astrea once again, determined to redeem himself and rise above his previous defeat. As a royal knight, Julius refuses to accept failure as his final outcome, not only for Anastasia's sake but also to maintain his pride. This is a reckless move, considering that Reid Astrea is much stronger, faster and more experienced in the way of the sword.
While this was happening, the rest of the group met with Ram to discuss Reid Astrea's strength and their low chance of passing the second test. Subaru quickly notices that Julius is nowhere to be seen and without hesitation rushes back to the second floor. He finds him locked in a brutal fight where Reid nearly kills Julius with a pair of deadly chopsticks.
Fortunately, Re:Zero Season 4, Episode 6 skips another brutal character death, instead allowing Subaru to arrive in time to intervene before Julius receives his death sentence. Overall, the episode delivers satisfying sword and magic action, and even without any brutal character deaths, it still manages to leave a strong impact through Reid Astrea's overwhelming fighting prowess, Emilia's daring play, and Julius Juukulius' steadfast determination and growth in the face of defeat.
