The Pokemon TCG has remained popular throughout its run, and while it has had an influx of new and returning players in 2024 thanks to Pokemon TCG Pocket, some of its physical cards have also received extra attention. A look back at 2024 in the Pokemon TCG has revealed which cards have increased in value the most this year, and it's a couple of well-known moves that are worth quite a bit more now than they were 12 months ago.
TCGplayer has run down which Pokemon cards have increased in value the most in 2024, and it's a famous addition to the game from 2021 that has had a better year than any other card. Umbreon VMAX, also known as Moonbreon has, due to its design, been a valuable card ever since its release in 2021. However, an even better year than usual for the highly sought-after card has seen it nearly triple in price.

The alternative artwork Umbreon VMAX card sold for an average of $538 in the first week of 2024. Fast forward to the end of the year and it will now cost you roughly $1,400 to buy one. Real jump in price, and it is not entirely clear why its value has increased so much, especially in the last quarter of the year. The reveal of Prismatic Evolutions, an upcoming Eevee-centric set, and a new Umbreon card may be partially to blame, its reveal and recent increase in the card's price coinciding.
Moonbreon is only getting more valuable
2024 has been a big year for everyone's favorite card
Other Pokemon cards that have increased in value this year include the beautiful ones Latios & Latias GX that crept over $1,000 at the end of November, and Paldea Evolved Magikarp Illustration Rare which has gone from $67 in value to $202 over the course of the year. But one card value worth tracking that isn't in TCGplayer's top ten is the infamous Van Gogh Pikachu.
Officially named Pikachu With Gray Felt Hat, although its value dropped in late February as Pokemon printed the card en masse. But in September, Van Gogh Pikachu's value began to rise again, and quickly. Here we are on the last day of the year and not only is the promo card worth almost double what it was this time last year, but its value is almost three times what it was when Pokemon made it more widely available in February.
Especially good news for owners of the Pikachu card as it was a free gift when they bought select products at the Pokemon Center. One of the more controversial cards released in recent years as news that it would be handed out at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum in 2023 resulted in a small-scale riot that ended with some museum staff losing their jobs.
