Before DICE rebooted Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, gave the now-defunct developer Free Radical Star Wars fans the opportunity to relive their favorite skirmishes from the classic films in the original Star Wars: Battlefront back in 2004. A sequel was released a year later to coincide with Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sithwhich includes elements from that film in addition to space battles and playable hero characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
Some handheld and mobile Star Wars: Battlefront games were released in the years that followed, and Free Radical planned to continue the main series. The third entry would have used improved technology to enable seamless combat from ground to space, while concept art for the fourth suggested a “what-if” story campaign with alternate Star Wars scenarios like Luke Skywalker turning to the dark side. Unfortunately, none of these projects came to fruition, as Star Wars: Battlefront 3 reportedly canceled in 2008 after a rocky development cycle. Free Radical design co-founder Steve Ellis would later claim that Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was almost finished when LucasArts shut it down.
