Overheating PS5 causes major problems at EVO JAPAN Grand Final Tournament

PS5 console used during Owe Gear -Trive- Championships at Evo Japan 2025 are said to be overheated during the big last match, causing an irreversible setback for one of the finalists. A major change after Sony's acquisition of the EVO brand was the widespread use of PS5 consoles for championship matches. Evo Japan was an exciting event for Fighting Game fans, not only because of the intense matches, but also the abundance of revelations.

One of those Owe Gear -Trive- Finalists, together with several participants and fighting game fans, claimed that an overheating PS5 affected the result of the match. Redditto, who represented the United States in Evo Japan in 2025, suggested that the worked up console probably made his control unit adapter work. In the match films, both Redditto and his Korean opponents, Kim “Daru” Jae-Won, can be seen as pausing cards in the middle of the game, apparently because of the error. The Arc World Tour champion tweeted later, “I think PS5 melts my Brooks adapter,” got several colleagues to speak out and criticize the event for overuse of PS5 consoles in championship tournaments.

Another participant tweeted that they had to borrow their controller adapter to Redditto before the last match, claiming that the overheating console “melted” Hans. This suggests that the problem may have really originated from PS5's cooling system, especially considering that the event's consoles are run for longer hours, making them prone to overheat. However, there has been no official statement from the EVO championship series, and it is still unconfirmed if the error was caused by the console or the player's adapter.

Following Redditto's controversial loss to his Korean opponent, colleague PRO players punk a similar experience. He claimed he lost in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Championships because his controller suddenly stopped the middle of the match. Punk also noted that the same problem occurred during the Evo Championship Series 2024 while competing in Street Fighter 6 tournament. Some fans have reacted to Punk's tweet and claim that the Xbox console should once again be one of the event's platforms and claims that it runs struggling games more efficiently.
