Fear Tall Grass, a new dark fantasy creature fighter, has just been announced for Nintendo Switch. Alongside a Nintendo Switch port, Fear tall grass will be heading to Xbox and PlayStation, as well as PC via Steam.
Fear tall grass is developed by Forgotten Bastions and published by Entalto Publishing. While this appears to be the first major video game project from Forgotten Bastions, Entalto has published a handful of games since 2022. These include titles such as Vampire: The Masquerade – Heartless Lullabya free-to-play CRPG set in the World of Darkness universe. Entalto's latest title is about as far removed from the world of darkness as you can get, with its in-house studio releasing SpongeBob: The Krusty Cook-Off in August 2025.

Is the Switch 2 worth it now?
The Nintendo Switch 2 has been out for almost a year, but is the hybrid console worth buying at this point? Or should we wait?
Fear Tall Grass is a new creature fighter coming to Nintendo Switch
Announced via a reveal trailer posted on YouTube, Fear tall grass will see players take on the role of Gray, a child who has been trapped in the center of a holy war. As Gray, players must venture into the menacing tall grass that now covers most of the world and face the hostile beasts that lurk within. To fend off these powerful enemies, players must tame and capture some of these beasts and use them as soldiers in their ongoing war.
Fear tall grass puts strategy at the forefront, and as such its core gameplay loop is multi-faceted. During a mission, players will be presented with a square map similar to a board game. Players will be prompted to roll some dice, and their character will move along the edge of the board one tile at a time. These tiles can offer important resources or threaten players with a combat encounter.
When a battle encounter is triggered, players will be faced with a 2D arena with an enemy on one side and their own beast on the other. Just like Pokémonplayers will need to use turn-based inputs to command their beast (here called Vilekin) to attack the enemy. When the enemy is weak enough, players can try to capture the creature and add it to their team. According to Fear tall grass' Steam page, the game will feature 90 Vilekin at launch, with 15 unique types available for each of the game's six distinct elements. As you might expect, these six elements are all resistant or weak to each other. Alongside these Vilekin, players will have access to a range of command abilities that can aid their animals in battle.
The game has six elemental types: Hydro, Pyro, Nature, Physical, Volt and Rock. For those familiar with the concept, the game promises to work similarly to Pokemon Legends: Arceus when it comes to mastering each Vilkin and their types, as players can improve Vilkin's abilities and evolution opportunities by catching more and more of each type.

Between missions, players will return to The Sanctuary of Light, a hub where they can construct new buildings, unlock new mechanics, and invest in permanent upgrades to facilitate future runs. There is no official release date for Fear tall grass yet, but its Steam page indicates that the game has a planned release window of Q4 2026, meaning the game could arrive between October and December of this year. It is also currently unclear whether Fear tall grass will launch simultaneously on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, or if it comes to PC first and consoles at a later date.
