GameChat is one of the most popular Nintendo Switch 2 Features, but it is not indefinitely, with a session that is automatically closed after 24 hours. Switch 2 is full of more power than its predecessor, and is also equipped with a few more watches and whistles, making it easier than ever to enjoy games with friends both close and long.
Ahead of Switch 2's full revelation in April, many fans were curious about the new C button on the new Joy-Cons. As it turns out, pressing this will launch a gamechat session, which means that up to 12 players can chat at the same time, with four players who can also share their screen at once. To participate in a Switch 2 GameChat session, players must add desired contacts to their friends list, which ensures that no strangers will join and improve the security of the new service. Many players are not strangers to draw all evenings when it comes to the latest title or a particularly fun multiplayer session, but it looks like GameChat has a maximum time limit before players will have to take a break.

Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive seems to miss local multiplayer, but it won't be a trend
An upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game seems to miss local multiplayer, but fans don't have to worry about starting a trend.
As reported by Nintendo Soup and originally detected by Youtuber Nathaniel Bandy, a single GameChat session on Nintendo Switch 2 can be run for up to 24 hours before you automatically close. All users in the chat will receive a warning 30 minutes before the room's closure and will receive subsequent warnings in five minutes and one minute before the 24-hour limit. Thankfully, it is possible to simply start another session immediately after. While the service is currently free for all Switch 2 users, GameChat will require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription from April 1, 2026.
A GameChat session on Switch 2 can run for up to 24 hours
GameChat is just one of many new features available on Switch 2, including a faster eShop experience, mouse-like Joy-Con controller, improved sound quality and lots of space compared to the original console. Nintendo's new hybrid console is also much more powerful and can play more robust and graphically intense titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy 7 -REMAKE.
As one of the most awaited launches in 2025, Switch 2 continues to break records and sells three million units globally on its launch day June 5. It also exceeded the record for most consoles sold in a day, previously held by Playstation 4, which sent a million units on day one as early as 2013. Many hopeful players are still trying to hold a Switch 2 for themselves, with many retailers struggling to maintain stock.
