8 Ale Abbey
Build a monastery that brews the best beer
- Platforms: PC
- Expected release: 2024
- Developer: Hammer & Ravens
Ale Abbey is a new medieval game that allows players to build a monastery and hopefully brew the best beer in the land. In terms of managing and expanding the monastery, the game works like a colony sim, as it is not only important to get wealth, but also to keep everyone happy. At the end of the day, happy monks, brew better beer.
The brewing aspect of the game is where things get really interesting, though, especially for those interested in the craft, as there are no ready-made recipes in Ale Abbey. Instead, players must experiment, innovate and adapt to create the best ale. To do so, they can learn from different European regions and buy new technology to help them craft. There is a free demo available for Ale Abbey which PC players can check out on Steam.
7 Half sword
Physics-based medieval duels in full plate armor
- Platforms: PC
- Expected release: TBA

If gamers can't get enough of medieval fighting games, then Half sword is definitely one to keep an eye on. The game features weapons and armor from the 15th century, with a strong focus on realism and precise fighting styles. Thanks to the physics-based combat, players will really feel like they are the ones with a sword, mace or other weapon in their hands.
Although there is no release date yet, PC gamers can check out the free demo for Half sword on Steam and possibly help with playtesting as well. Learning the complex combat mechanics early will give players an advantage when the game finally releases. Fans of true medieval history will also be pleased to see that the vibrancy of the Middle Ages has been accurately portrayed, something that is thankfully becoming more common in the media.
6 Crimson Desert
A Medieval Fantasy RPG with a huge scope
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
- Expected release: 2025
- Developer: Pearl Abyss
Although it won't arrive until 2025, Crimson Desert is certainly a game to get excited about, and players will be surprised by how ambitious the project is. Set in a medieval fantasy world that shares certain characteristics with Black Desert Online, Crimson Desert is instead an open-world single-player role-playing game. The continent of Pywel is reportedly huge, with players able to explore several different regions, each with their own stories to tell.
From the trailer alone, fans can see not only how beautiful the game looks but also how many gameplay options will be available to them. In many ways, Crimson Desert almost looks like a medieval fantasy version of RDR2, with players able to hijack carriages and tame horses. But there are also many unique elements, such as the ability to shoot siege towers at enemies or take to the sky in a hot air balloon.
5 Blight: Survival
An Extraction-Lite game set in a land gripped by plague
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
- Expected release: TBA
- Developer: Haenir Studio
Although it currently has no release date, Blight: Survival is an upcoming medieval game to get excited about, largely because of the incredible battle animations that were showcased in the trailer. The premise of the extraction-lite game is that players are dropped into an alternate medieval world, where a deadly plague has taken over and infected the fallen. This Blight mutates corpses and brings them back to life, and it is the player's job to locate the source of the Blight and destroy it.
As mentioned earlier, the animations are a huge standout, as there's real weight to every movement, and actions like tackling and grappling are both possible. The late medieval armor also looks fantastic and very accurate, with the developers also confirming that everything is customizable.

3 Gothic remake
A modern remake of the 2001 medieval fantasy classic
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
- Expected release: TBA
- Developer: Alchemy Interactive
In 2001, Gothic was a revolutionary RPG, and gamers around at the time still have fond memories of the series. Soon, however, there will be a completely modern remake, with realistic graphics and an improved battle system that still feels the same.
While Gothic remake isn't quite a medieval game with lots of fantasy elements and an overly gloomy setting, it should still appeal to a lot of fans who just can't get enough of adventures inspired in any part of the Middle Ages. As players explore and try to survive in the mining colony there a lot of Gothic takes place, they will notice that the world is really alive, as everyone sleeps, eats and has a job to do. The Gothic Games are known for packing tons of exploration into seemingly small worlds.
