New military sim makes ARC Raiders, Marathon and Battlefield look bad

It's no big secret that shooters are incredibly popular, but the genre has changed quite a bit since its early days Halo and Medal of Honor. This is especially true in the competitive scene, where games like ARC Raiderswhich is much more focused on discovery, exploration and stealth, manages to wipe the floor with traditional shooters like Call of Duty. This is a good thing: while I personally don't enjoy extraction shooters as much as traditional ones, more diversity and experimentation within the online shooter scene makes for a more exciting, richer gaming landscape as a whole.

At the same time, Sagittarius are more fickle than ever. With the live service model, it's not enough for these types of games to launch with a solid set of features and content; they must maintain themselves and continue to hold their audience's attention. Perhaps that's why, despite their enormous initial success, both ARC Raiders and Battlefield 6 have seen major declines in player numbers, as the more transient members of their player base move on to other games. One such game is Gray zone warfarea shooter that, despite still being early available, has drawn a number of comparisons to the aforementioned titles, as well Marathon and Escape from Tarkov. These comparisons have generally been favorable to Gray zone warfarewhich threatens to grow into a massive hit.

Marathon is now here to give ARC Raiders its first major competitor, and this is how each game's Steam player count is shaped.

What is Gray Zone Warfare, Early Access Shooter Sweeping Steam?

Gray zone warfare is set on a “Southeast Asian island” torn apart by civil war, but there's a bit more to it than that. The gray zoneThe developer, MADFINGER Games, has been open about the game being inspired by Picnic by the roadthe same seminal sci-fi novel that inspired the likes of Subway 2033 and that STALKER game. This adds an undeniable element of mystery to it The gray zones world, because there's always a deeper, more troubling story underpinning its seemingly traditional military sim paraphernalia.

And Gray zone warfare really leans into its military swimming roots and places a heavy emphasis on tactics, thoughtfulness, strategy and teamwork. Gunplay is complex and heavy, healing is realistic and compartmentalized, and damage can result in persistent, noticeable changes, like a cavity left on a character model after being shot. These creative choices, along with Gray zone warfares lifelike graphics, has drawn comparisons to Escape from Tarkovalthough it seems to have escaped many of the criticisms leveled at it Tarkovsuch as poor optimization and bugginess.

Gray Zone Warfare's PvE options

One of the biggest complaints against ARC Raiders relates to its lack of PvE options. Of course, this isn't really a flaw in the game in the strict sense, as developer Embark Studios has been clear that this is by design: ARC Raiders is meant to be competitive, and “forced” PvP has been considered an important part of this formula. But still, not all players appreciate the stress and pressure that comes along with PvP in an extraction shooter, where a well-placed shot from a more experienced player half a mile away can wipe out your last thirty minutes of progress.

Gray zone warfare has PvP and PvPvE, but also an option for just PvE, solo or with a team. This relatively minor option will have a significant impact on The gray zone experience as a whole, as players can basically play it as a co-op shooter if they want to. This is not only good for new players still learning the ropes, but also for more established PvP players looking to take things down. Again, Gray zone warfare trying to tell a Picnic by the road-inspired story, and a less sweaty, more relaxed PvE mode facilitates that. Best of all, there are no separate saves or characters for these modes: you can seamlessly switch between PvP, PvE, and PvPvE without losing progress.

Gray Zone Warfare's 0.4 update makes it even better

Gray zone warfare has taken off since its early access release in 2024, but the latest patch has rekindled interest in the game significantly. Update 0.4 was launched on March 31 and introduces countless improvements to The gray zonewith some of the most notable including:

  • Over 100 new tasks and contracts (quests)

  • Over 25 new locations

  • Improvements to lighting, visual effects and user interface

  • More lore to discover

  • Eight new weapons and over 150 new tools

The game is still in early access, so it should go without saying that it's not perfect. For example, Gray zone warfareThe enemy AI is a bit lacking in the intelligence department, and the mission design can be missed. But the consensus is The gray zone is in surprisingly great condition so far, to the point that it's already a suitable replacement for ARC Raiders, Marathon, Tarkovand other leading extraction shooters/military sims. Hopefully the game manages to keep this momentum going into the 1.0 release, whenever that is.
