Intense loyalties and costly betrayals often go hand in hand when it comes to pirates and the world at large One Piece. Although betrayal is often startling, it is common in the world of pirates, and it makes loyalties that much more valuable.
Whether it's sacrificing everything for a friend, loyalty to one person, or even the simple act of protecting one's captain, these moments have shaped One Pieces lore, as they serve as acts of devotion that make the story more than just an adventure. With their loyalty, some characters have really proven themselves, but the truly impressive ones have set their mark and shape One Pieces history.
8 Luffy rushes to drive down Ace
Challenge the world for the family
- Arc: Amazon Lily–Impel Down,
Blood thicker than water is usually the case, but Luffy proves that “sake” and shared experiences can triumph over it. Fans got to know Luffy's brother during the Alabasta arc, but their bond was really explored when Ace's life was on the line.
When Luffy was told that his brother was to be executed, he delayed searching for his scattered crew members and infiltrated Impel Down, the World Government's highest security prison in the world. Later, Luffy went to Marineford to free Ace and bravely challenged three admirals to save his brother, all while having only his willpower and loyalty to Ace as motivators.
7 Bon Clay sacrifices himself
Risking life and liberty
Bon Clay may not be a main character or one with a lot of screen time, but he is definitely one of the most loyal individuals to grace Luffy's life. After teaming up at Impel Down, Bon Clay showed his loyalty to the Straw Hat captain by repeatedly risking his life when Luffy was about to die.
His many sacrifices cannot be overstated, but nothing compares to when the imitative individual sacrificed not only his life but also his freedom. The moment when Bon Clay was revealed to have impersonated Magellan to aid Luffy's escape would forever be remembered, as it was both tear-jerking and heart-wrenching.
6 Pedro sacrifices himself
One last act of faith
After Nekomamushi and Inuarashi, Pedro might as well have been the next leader of the minks. However, believing in Monkey D. Luffy, an individual with so much potential, Pedro did not hesitate to sacrifice his life for his faith.
Dying for someone else is incredibly heroic, but willingly blowing yourself up makes the act and effect that much more grand and poignant. In the short time that Pedro knew Luffy, he became incredibly loyal to him, and he showed that loyalty without much pain or remorse. He willingly gave his life, a feat that some of Luffy's crew members may not be able to achieve.
5 Refusing to join Straw Hats for Alabasta
Loyalty to Alabasta over freedom
The Princess of the Alabasta Kingdom went through a lot with the Straw Hats. To defeat Crocodile and free her country, Vivi fought alongside the Straw Hats and bonded with them, becoming related to a fellow crew member. After Crocodile's defeat, it was time for the pirate crew to leave Alabasta, and whether or not to go with Vivi became a big decision.
Although it was a tough decision, Vivi finally decided to stay back. In this way, she remained true to her country and shouldered the burden of the citizens who needed to build themselves up, rather than living a free life as a pirate.
4 Sacrificing stardom for the Straw Hats
Abandoning fame for friendship
- Arc: Return To Sabaody (Post Time-Skip)
Soul King Brook was a unique discovery for the Straw Hat Pirates. Finding him at the Florian Triangle, he and the crew went on to meet Gecko Moria, a erstwhile warlord. By defeating Moria, Brook became a member of the crew; unfortunately, shortly after that, the crew was separated for two years, despite Brook only being a member for a few months.
During these years, Brook gained enormous stardom as the Soul King, a rock star. But instead of continuing to bask in the fame and money, Brook gave it all up for a crew he'd only been a member of for a few months.
3 Takes Luffy's Pain
Zoro's silent loyalty
Straw Hat's Three Sword Style swordsman suffering in place of his captain has always and will always be talked about because of how legendary it was. Luffy is known to always take massive damage after a battle, but no one really knows how lethal his injuries are. That is, of course, until Zoro took it.
In that moment, Zoro gave up his life and ambitions for his captain, stating that his ambition didn't matter if his captain was dead. To make his incredible feat even cooler, Zoro never complained or talked about it, ending all questions about what happened with “Nothing happened.”
2 Crossing the future to once again fight Kaido
A legacy of patience and loyalty
The story of the Akazaya Samurai is one of pain, hardship and fierce loyalty. After Kaido executed Odin, his retainer escaped, vowing to one day avenge his master. Interestingly, this revenge would not come until two decades into the future.
Some of the samurai patiently waited out the years, while others traveled into the future to get revenge on Kaido. In a situation where many would simply flee the country or live out their own lives, these samurai waited patiently and planned for 20 years, all to avenge their master. In the end, their patience paid off, but this would not have been possible without their dogged dedication to the cause.
1 Enduring torture to protect a samurai
A nation's victim
The minks have possibly the greatest display of loyalty to date in the country One Piece series. Despite being tortured for days and nights by Jack, an All-Star of the Beast pirates, men, women and even children were willingly tortured and experienced the death of their loved ones.
All to keep Raizo safe, an individual who hadn't been heard from in over 20 years, as he was also sent to the future by Toki. What makes this feat so great is that a single person did not accomplish it; it was an entire nation of minks without a single betrayal, despite Nekomamushi and Inuarashi losing an arm and a leg respectively.
