Modnation Racers has been revived by fans, with online support

One of the PS3's most underrated cult classics, Modnation Racers has just been brought back in 4K by fans and even has full online support.

Although the PlayStation 3 started life shooting itself in the foot with a hefty price tag, it eventually went on to become one of the company's best and most well-rounded consoles, especially now that we see what Sony wants to do next. Unfortunately, the PS3 is also a bit of a graveyard for some great hidden gems that we will probably never see again.

There are some obvious titles that have stuck on the PS3 like Infamous, Resistance and the early Killzone games, but more interesting are the ones that didn't get much time in the spotlight. The Puppeteer, Rag Doll Kung Fu, and Tokyo Jungle all come to mind pretty quickly, but one of my favorites is Modnation Racers, which is finally getting the love it's always deserved.

Modnation Racers fans have brought it back on PC, and it's better than ever

With online support and crossplay, this is the Revival PlayStation refused to give us

For those who don't know, which I'm guessing is a lot of you considering the series never really took off, Modnation Racers was a kart racing game with a heavy focus on customization and player creation that gave it some heavy LittleBigPlanet vibes. The underrated gem was released on PS3 in 2010 and while it had a dedicated player base, that unfortunately didn't stop it from going completely offline in 2018.

Because Modnation Racers was laser-focused on its online gameplay, it was taken offline and locked to the PS3 for eternity basically entirely. That was until Twitter user PStripl3 confirmed that they have managed to revive the game and make it playable on PC with full online support.

That's not all though, this PC version of Modnation Racers actually improves on the original, with 4K and 60fps for the first time, enhancements, crossplay and support for the game's massive amount of crossover DLC. Twitter user StormslayerDev, who first shared the news of the revival, even showed off some of the skins, such as Sly, Sackboy and Kratos, in action.

I have no idea if this emulated version of Modnation Racers will be picked up by Sony and eventually taken down (as a separate revival project still seems to exist), but it's still heartwarming to see such a cult classic given new life all these years later. I just wish United Front Games was still around to see how loved their first game still is to this day.
