“Lots of important decisions are made” Dispatch's Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette reveal their favorite episode

Dispatch is a branching narrative game from AdHoc Studio, a team of former Telltale developers who know a thing or two about choice-driven storytelling. The choose-your-own-adventure game follows ex-superhero Robert Robertson, who quits working at a chaotic dispatch center after losing his mech suit, temporarily demoting him from superhero to dispatcher. Instead of locking up bad guys, he now makes split-second decisions over a headset, and those choices come back quickly. The entire game lives and breathes through the relationships players have with either building or destroying, making each new conversation as important as the last.

In a recent interview with Game Rant, voice actor Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part 2, Critical role, Marvel's Spider-Man 2) and Erin Yvette (Hades 2, The wolf among us, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon) talked about his time to work on Dispatch and why one episode in particular stood out to them. Both immediately pointed to episode 4 as their favorite, teasing that this is where things really start to change in the story. Without spoiling anything, they hinted that this is the point where some big choices land hard and the relationships players have built finally start to pay off, raising the stakes in a way that sounds like it will catch a lot of players off guard.

Telltale veterans should be familiar with what the choose-your-own-adventure game is like Dispatch works, where the player's dialogue choices generally have a much greater impact on the story than many choice-driven RPGs can compete with. According to Erin Yvette, episode 4 of Dispatch is one such episode, as it seemingly puts players in a position where the choices they make will significantly change their relationships with certain characters. When asked what their favorite episode was and why, Yvette broke the ice with “I love 4” and then explained:

“A lot of important decisions are made. I also think it's an episode that shines a lot of light on certain characters and just adds some depth and nuance to Robert's relationship with them, and also just your general understanding of where they're coming from and what they're looking for — why they're there and what they want.”

Hearing Yvette confirm that episode 4 was her favorite episode, Bailey immediately chimed in with an emphatic, “I'd say 4!” With that, there is a high chance that episode 4 of Dispatch contains one of the game's greatest moments, considering the two were so in agreement about it. Bailey added,

“I think Episode 4 starts off in a really solid way that Nick and Pierre were like, 'Here we go! Get ready, Laura!'”

Now, although both Bailey and Yvette agreed that episode 4 of Dispatch was their favorite, AdHoc Studios founder Nick Herman and Pierre Shorette's “Here we go! Get ready, Laura!” the direction suggests that Invisigal will play a significant role in Robert Robertson's arc during the episode. Of course, this could just be due to the choices players make throughout the game's story, as actor Aaron Paul confirmed during a previous interview that recording dialogue for Dispatch took about two years due to the number of different paths players can take and the large number of characters involved.

However it happens, if Dispatch Actors Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette both preemptively concluded that the game's fourth episode is their favorite, so it's likely they're not alone in that feeling. At the very least, players may want to pay special attention to their choices regarding Robert's relationship with the Blonde Blazer and Invisigal in episodes up to 4, in light of how agreed Yvette and Bailey were about its importance to the story.
