Battlefield 6 has its share of funny references, whether it's the dinosaur toy at the beginning of BF6 campaign that calls back to Battlefield 3 or some Dead Space tributes on a dinner menu. But players recently uncovered a truly strange secret on the New Sobek City multiplayer map, which mixed in with all the trash and debris is an alien skull. This large, elongated alien head (discovered by Easter egg hunter Edwaxed and shared on Reddit by PeanutIllustrious) is covered in strange markings that the community has been trying to decipher, and so far fans have two theories as to what this random secret might imply.
The first possibility is that it is the beginning of another Phantom program, a complex ARG that has taken place in several Battlefield game and rewards unique cosmetics or weapons like the Phantom Bow. If so, players will soon find themselves solving complex puzzles both in-game and on websites, working together to find out what secret rooms and tasks BF Studios has planned for them. However, the use of an alien skull specifically, as opposed to the split human skull traditionally associated with the fictional Phantom faction, means that this easter egg could suggest something else entirely. Specifically, some players believe an Alien game mode too Battlefield 6 may be imminent.
There's even an argument to be made that Aliens Vs. Dinosaurs should be closer to what the location actually is, as a T-Rex skull can also be found on the outskirts of Sobek City. As said, Battlefield has always played with dinosaurs, while the alien teaser seems a bit more bold.
Would Battlefield 6 fans even like an Aliens mode?
Given all the backlash to unrealistic skins in Battlefield 6it's hard to imagine older members of the fanbase appreciating a hypothetical Soldiers vs. Aliens. Complaints about such an immersion-breaking feature would no doubt surface the second such a mode was announced, with BF6 sure to be accused of “losing the plot” in the same way as Black Ops 7 the campaign has been roasted online for its boss fights. All players who want realism from Battlefield 6 would shun the mode and criticize Battlefield Studios for spending time and resources creating it when there are so many demands for add-ons like large maps. However, this does not automatically mean that the mode cannot work, as Battlefield have successfully experimented in the past.
Battlefield 2142 is a cult classic, with futuristic warfare and mechanics that were a fairly new concept for a major FPS when it was released in 2006. Battlefield: Hardlineanother cult classic, came out in 2015 and focused on a cops vs. robbers concept. None of these games were traditional Battlefieldbut they had their fans, which showed that there would certainly be interest from the more open-minded half of society. And with Battlefield Portal existing and players creating everything from Cod map remasters to over-the-top race tracks within it, Battlefield 6 already provides access to content that clashes with its normal multiplayer tone. As long as an alien mode got its own lore and was kept separate from the main one Battlefield timeline, anyone uninterested in the concept could ignore it, and it might even win over some doubters if there's enough passion behind it. Battlefield Studios would surely have ways to make the mode feel like a real BF experience as well.
What could a Battlefield 6 Alien game mode look like?
A Battlefield 6 alien mode can lean into a concept that the game is only scratching the surface of via bot lobbies and portal creations: PvE. A cooperative experience pitting a group of players against hundreds of invaders from another planet can be incredible, especially if Battlefields brand features were implemented in such a mode:
-
Vehicles could see players shoot at the UFOs from the ground in Tanks, or skilled pilots could chase them down via Battlefield 6s jet for some unique dogfights.
-
Destruction can showcase the power of alien weaponry, with blasters tearing apart buildings and UFO beams ripping apart structures.
- Battlefields large-scale warfare could see more than the standard four-player co-op offered through an alien mode, with multiple teams of four potentially being supported.
- Battlefield Portal could allow for an infinite alien mode, as if BF Studios would give creators access to alien models and behavior, players would be able to keep making more maps for years.
- Battlefields class system could give players four distinct roles in the mode, with special gadgets attached to each that are handcrafted for the mode. Think the underrated Extinction mode from Call of Duty: Ghosts.
While many have long requested a Dino Mode for Battlefield 6the reality is that enemy variety would be quite limited, as almost every enemy – whether flyers, small dinos that attack in packs, or huge creatures – would be a melee attacker. With Aliens there is room for Battlefield going wild with alien vehicles, armored enemies, ranged and melee attackers, animals under the command of smarter aliens and so on. An Alien faction would be the gift that keeps on giving for a co-op mode in BF6as BF Studios could get as creative as they want with the antagonists arsenal.
Battlefield 6's Aliens could be its answer to CoD Zombies
As Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7 has shown, the rivalry between the two greatest military FPS series of all time seems destined to continue forever, and an Alien-centric PvE mode would finally allow BF Studios to counter Cods most unique content. It borrows several concepts from Treyarch's beloved survival mode, from rounds and hidden easter egg missions to a new Wonder Weapon added with each official map. Tonally, there's a case to be made for an alien mode to be more serious and akin to something like Insomniac's PS3 era Resistance trilogy, but it might as well imitate Cod Zombie's mix of humor, madness and mystery. However, its story could be told through radios and secret messages, as the Phantom programs of the past have shown that BF Studios would be capable of old-school Cod Zombie's storytelling wanted to go that way.
While Cod Zombies can be a lightning in the bottle success, and a BF6 Alien mode might not be able to capture the same magic, there's no way to know how it would work until it's tried. Battlefield RedSec has done quite well as a free-to-play battle royale experience, so maybe Battlefield 6 could eat in Call of Dutys territory even more with a location reminiscent of Cod Zombies. At the very least, it would be interesting to see attempts, and with BF Studios composed of several teams, it feels like a real personality. For now, though, an Alien game mode remains speculation based on a random skull found in a multiplayer map, as there's no evidence that it's anything more than a fun gag. Perhaps players will soon find out what the skull's purpose is, and if anything actually happens when it's been shot and broken, but an Alien mode is just a fun fan theory at the time of writing.
