How to unlock Altar Teleportation in Romestead

Fast travel in Romestead is not available from the start – you have to work for it. The system is built around altar teleportation, a skill that lets you stretch between locations once you've done the legwork to set it up.

The good news is that the setup is more manageable than it might first appear: with the right knowledge, you can establish a bare-bones settlement containing only a single upgraded altar, manned by just one person, especially for fast travel. This guide will walk you through unlocking the Altar Teleport skill and building the upgraded Altar you need to use it.

Romestead is currently in Early Access – the details below are subject to change during development!

How to unlock Altar Teleportation

Altar Teleport is a Rank 2 skill in the Mercury skill, which costs two Worship points to unlock. Before it even shows up as an option, you have to do it first complete the quest Giant Owl — this is what unlocks both Carpenter building type and the ability to upgrade your altar to level 2both of which are prerequisites for fast travel to work.

Once the Giant Owl quest is complete and you have two worship points to spend, enter the Mercury skill and get Altar Teleport. Of course, you have to unlock this by doing enough Hermes deals!

Once you have the upgraded Altar, you can use the Teleport button to instantly zip to any other upgraded Altars you have placed.

Romestead: 10 tips for beginners

Here are 10 tips for getting started in Romestead, including tons of things I wish I'd known when I first started playing.

How to build an altar at level 2

A Level 2 altar is the minimum requirement to use the Altar Teleport skill. You don't need a fully functional settlement to get one – a stripped-down outpost with just four structures will do:

  1. A workbench — place this to establish a settlement flag and find a new city.

  2. A material warehouse.

  3. A carpentry workshop.

  4. An altar.

This means you only need a small collection of available trees and rocks to create a stable fast travel point!

Notably, no one needs to be assigned the Carpenter's Workshop – just having it built is enough to enable the altar upgrade. This means you can establish a dedicated fast travel outpost almost anywhere on the map without putting a strain on your capital's workforce.
