The first step is to find a workbench. Each level i Rogue Core have a workbench somewhere.
However, the game's RNG means that its location changes every time, so you may have to explore a bit before you find it. When you finally find a workbench, you should approach it and interact with it “Enable Toolkit Locator” alternative. Doing this will reveal the toolkit's location on your Terrain Scanner.
Now, open your map with the Tab or M key and look for the red marker. That's where the toolbox is hidden. Toolkit spawn is also randomized, so its location will be different for each player and each run. It took me about three minutes to find it.
Once you find the toolbox, all you have to do is dig it up with your trusty pickaxe. After picking it up, you can go back to the Workbench and interact with it again. Your dwarf will place the toolbox on the workbench, which will activate it. Once that's done, you can start using Workbench.

Once the Workbench is activated, you can interact with it to see everything it has available for your run. You can upgrade your weapons, improve your class abilities and switch weapons if you find something better than your current one.
Workbenches can make a big difference during tougher fights. I was able to find much stronger weapons through the Workbench in some of my runs, so that should definitely be a priority!
