Reflections, accidents and reunions in Final Fantasy 14
The history and fate of the 14 shards of Etheirys
Ascian's goal i Final Fantasy 14 was to piece together the fragments of the Zodiark by reuniting reflections with the source. Succeeding in that required them to create matching catastrophes on both the source and another shard, destroying the reflection in the process. From A kingdom againseven shards had been reunited, each marked by one of the Umbral Calamities that ravaged the source of FF14:

The fourth reflection faces a new type of calamity
While half of the shards of Etheirys were completely destroyed by the Asci, and others were looted through attempts to reunite, the fourth is unique in that it appears to have had little direct influence from the Asci. While Halmarut revealed that she and her Winterers are currently wearing designs FF14 Patch 7.5, it is unclear how much her colleagues had tampered with it before the recent events. Players must look out for the telltale signs of Ascian influence as they explore this mysterious world.
As far as is known, the fourth shares some things in common with the first. Also known as Norvrandt, the first was nearly destroyed by the flood of light in a failed reunification of the Ascii. The attempt failed, but wiped out nearly all life on Norvrandt in the process. The people of the first survived in settlements like Krystarium, similar to how the inhabitants of the fourth escaped the creeping frost by building the kingdom in the sky.
On the other hand, the ninth reflection i Final Fantasy 14 was hit by a catastrophic event known as the Storm Surge. This lightning-aspected catastrophe wiped out much of the shard, although pockets of civilization, such as Alexandria and Treno, survived. It is unclear whether the insidious winter that plagues the Fourth is the result of Winter's plans or the solstice—the natural reunification of the shards that occurs in Hydaelyn's absence. Anyway, the fourth is grappling with a similar elemental catastrophe.
It is possible that the storm surge on the ninth could also be linked to the solstice. The timeline doesn't match considering FF14 the goddess Hydaelyn fell recently, but the time dilation between shards makes it likely.
Of End walkernothing was known about the fourth, eighth, ninth and eleventh shards. With the exploration of the ninth in Dawnrailand the fourth enters FF14: Evercoldfans shouldn't be surprised if the eighth and eleventh appear in the future, perhaps with their own fire, water, earth, or wind-aspected disasters.
References to Norse Mythology on the Fourth in FF14: Evercold
And how they can be tied to the saga of the godless kingdoms
The FF14: Evercold teaser trailer, screenshots and concepts show a number of references to Norse mythology, which may hint at the plot of the Evercold. Here are some of the biggest Norse mythology references shown so far:
-
The large tree seen in the mural, and later frozen in front of the praying Auri girl, could be a tribute to Yggdrasil, the sacred tree that connects the realms of Norse myth.
-
The creeping frost that threatens the fourth is reminiscent of Fimbulvetr, the dire winter precursor to Ragnarök, the Norse apocalypse.
-
The older, one-eyed male Au Ra may be a reference to Odin, the leader of the Norse pantheon.
-
The bridge and portal conjured by Ethos and Azem's crystal to cross worlds resembles Bifrost, Asgard's rainbow bridge in Norse myth.
-
Calyx, the hibernation from the ninth, is shaped like a squirrel plushie, which may be a reference to Ratatoskr, a messenger who travels across Yggdrasil.
-
Some of the architecture seen in EvercoldThe concept art bears Nordic inspiration, including the ships and serpentine structures that evoke Jormungandr, the world serpent.
IN Evercoldthe coming ice age seems to be a harbinger of the solstice: Ragnarok in its own right. The Odin-like Au Ra is likely trying to oppose this destruction, and may even be hibernating the fourth. Meanwhile, the big tree from the trailer could be the answer to fixing it all. After all, Yggdrasil connects the different realms of Norse mythology; if the tree of the fourth could do the same, perhaps the impending solstice could be prevented.
The Sephirot was a primal summoned by a race of plant-like beings who worshiped a divine tree in Meracydia at the Source. Players have long anticipated a visit to this mysterious continent, so if the Sephirot tree has a connection to the fourth one, Meracydia may finally appear in the Saga of the Godless Realms.
Final Fantasy 7 also has many Norse references, most notably the city of Midgar, named after the Norse word for the realm of the earth. Considering FF7 references seen in Final Fantasy 14's Fan Fest cash shop items and the Cetra-like architecture from concept art, Evercold could possibly see a Midgar of its own.

Of course, all this may be entirely circumstantial. There are several existing Nordic references in Final Fantasy 14 already, including Midgardsormr, Nidhogg and the original Odin, all unrelated to this theory. Still, Evercold is clearly building up to some huge twists and turns, and the nature of the fourth could be the key Final Fantasy 14s Godless Realms Saga.
