The physical release of Gothic 1 Remake launches with a big catch: it won't be playable right out of the box. Fans who pre-ordered a boxed copy of the game will instead need to download a hefty day-1 patch before theirs Gothic 1 Remake the adventure can begin.
Originally released in 2001, Gothic is a classic western RPG with a cult following due to its harsh fantasy setting, rewarding open world exploration, meaningful mission choices, and highly immersive progression system. Developed by now-defunct Essen-based studio Piranha Bytes, the game had a scattered release spanning most of 2001, debuting in Europe in March before reaching North America in October. Embracer Group's subsidiary THQ Nordic officially greenlit a Gothic remake in early 2020, and assigned the project to Alkimia Interactive, a Spanish studio created specifically for this purpose.

Gothic Remake Physical Console Edition has sneaky Day-One Patch requirements
X-user DoesItPlay1 reported on May 22 that the physical release of the Gothic 1 Remake cannot be played straight out of the box. They backed up the claim with a screenshot of an error message that says “unable to check game state” and prompts the player to make sure they're connected to the internet. Based on the button prompt visible in the image, the bug appeared in the PlayStation 5 version of the Gothic 1 Remake. DoesItPlay1 said the problem occurred when the physical console version launched from disc, adding that the release will be unplayable without a significant day-one update of around 5GB. Neither the RPG's PlayStation Store page nor its listings on other storefronts reveal an online check-in requirement or day one patch in late May 2026. DoesItPlay1 characterized this omission as misleading and urged fans to cancel their pre-orders in response.
Gothic 1 Remake will not have an always online requirement
The official GothicTheGame X account responded to the report four hours after it began circulating on social media, saying that physical copies of the game are not immediately playable because early manufacturing was the only way to ensure their buyers would be able to play them on day one. The same statement confirmed that the mandatory download will be around 5GB in size, which is around 8% of the unpatched game version's install size. While inconvenient, the requirement is a one-time issue, with THQ Nordic noting that the remake will not have an always-online requirement. Instead, the entire game will be playable offline after the first patch is downloaded.
Day one updates are standard practice in modern gaming, especially for complex, choice-driven RPGs in the vein of Gothic 1 Remake. However, some developers make them optional, allowing players to download them when convenient, thus catering to early adopters without reliable high-speed internet connections.
