FromSoftware's rumored pirate game should definitely be bloodier than Elden Ring

From software has become one of the most beloved developers in the industry, and a new round of rumors is making some really exciting claims about one of its next games. The developer is known for working on his Nintendo exclusive project, Duskbloodsbut these new rumors say that FromSoftware is actually working on a secret pirate game as well. FromSoftware has not confirmed or denied anything, so the potential project should be viewed with great skepticism until it is actually revealed.

Even if rumors of pirated games from FromSoftware turn out to be a bust, I've been thinking about what the perfect version of this project would look like. Everyone has their own opinions, though Blood borne is still the pinnacle of FromSoftware for me. Fire Ring may be the developer's latest game, but it falls flat for me in a few key ways that make me hope this potential pirate game looks to older FromSoftware titles for inspiration instead of its massive open-world fantasy.

15 Best of Software Games, Ranked

FromSoftware's long roster is full of excellence. From Dark Souls to Armored Core 6 and Nightreign, here's how the best titles rank.

Elden Ring's open world could definitely work for a pirate game, but it needs to embrace Bloodborne's tighter focus

Rumors about the pirate game don't offer many details, but they do at least mention that a core mechanic will sail the seas and explore islands. This doesn't necessarily have to be experienced through an open world map, but it's probably the better way in that sense. However, a great open-world game doesn't need to boast a huge map. Fire Rings map size is comparable GTA 5s map, and it sometimes feels like overkill. I know this is super subjective. Some people really love massive maps. Crimson Deserts map is one of the latest games to prove how much some players like to travel across a large landscape, but FromSoftware's strengths play better in more cohesive worlds.

Light (6) Medium (8) Hard (10)

Goes just a little less than Fire Rings map size would be a step in the right direction. There are plenty of games with bigger maps than that Fire Ring which are great, but one of many things that do Blood borne so replayable is that its smaller size encourages return because it's not as scary. A happy balance between Fire Ring and Blood bornethe size would be ideal. Yharnam's interlocking design can be expanded a bit larger to accommodate seafaring adventures.

Bloodborne's Combat feels more suited to a pirate adventure

I liked Fire Rings battle. The more methodical approach to boss fights can be really satisfying, though Blood bornes fast-paced battles are simply a better match for pirates. Blood borne is a more aggressive game, but that's not the only thing that should inform a pirate project's gameplay. The smaller construction variant is actually a plus. Just like its map, Fire Rings weapon goes above and beyond when it comes to trying to give players an all in one experience. However, bigger does not always mean better. Blood bornes smaller weapon list may not be as freedom-focused, but each weapon looks and feels incredibly unique. The design is more thought out, which gives a deeper personality Blood bornes world.

Two words… Gun Parry

One of the most satisfying parts of learning Blood bornes combat mechanics are catching up on the weapon parry. There are tons of crazy hard fights in it Blood borneand the pistol parry feels so good when you first nail it. Instead of defense, the parry encourages more intense encounters, and it's a real adrenaline rush.

If FromSoftware is indeed working on a pirate game, there will surely be some weapons thrown into the weapon list. A pirate game without any weapons would be really shocking. Of course, it also sounds like something FromSoftware would consider doing just to subvert expectations. If weapons are included in FromSoftware's next game, it would hopefully also mean the return of Blood bornes gun parry mechanic. The parry system could potentially be even better.

Giving Bloodborne's Cosmic Horror a Pirate Twist is too good a combination to pass up

Pirates and cosmic Lovecraft horror would be a dream for many gamers. There are some great games inspired by Lovecraft out there, but a FromSoftware pirate game inspired by the genre has the potential to be the pinnacle of this type of adaptation. FromSoftware proved with Blood borne that it can absolutely nail horribly bleak worlds that are cosmically doomed. Fire Ring's Lands Between is a beautiful world. It can also feel really peaceful when a character's life isn't on the line, though. A peaceful pirate game isn't a bad thing by any means, but there aren't enough stories that have attempted to mix pirates and horror. There is so much potential for this kind of genre crossover, and FromSoftware is the perfect developer to see it through.

At least another pirate game has already covered the sunny vibes

One of the most anticipated releases right now is Assassin's Creed Black Flag resync. This Assassin's Creed entry is not only considered one of the best in the franchise. It is considered by many to be one of the best pirate games ever and has some great cozy features. Assassin's Creed Black Flags release date is just around the corner as well. There's no telling when FromSoftware plans to address the rumors of its pirated game, but hopefully it will be soon. If the developer jumps into the world of pirates, it must feel very different than Black flag resynced.

I'm probably falling into a trap of wishful thinking here, but a world there Black flag resynced is a sunny and vibrant experience, and FromSoftware complementing it with its polar opposite sounds like an ideal scenario. It would really be the best of both worlds when it comes to great pirate games. Pirates in general don't get the love they deserve, and Black flag resynced and the rumored FromSoftware project hopefully changes that.

Other pirate games, like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Return to Monkey Islandhas been good in its own right, though Black flag resynced and FromSoftware can kick-start a renaissance. All that can be done right now is to wait and see if FromSoftware really has a pirate project cooking in the oven. If so, it hopefully fully embraces the potential as one Blood borne-inspired cosmic horror games have to do.
