Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is slated for a spring 2027 release date, officially marking the end of the ambitious remake project. Of course there may be some spin-offs or DLC too Final Fantasy 7 Revelationbut for the most part, the game will give rise to Square Enix's expensive, impressive FF7 remake saga, which started back in 2020 with the first entry, aptly titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Through the soon-to-be-completed trilogy, Square Enix has managed to introduce Final Fantasy 7 world and story to a whole new audience, while appealing to fans of the original PS1 classic. Released in 1997, Final Fantasy 7s cultural impact can be compared to releases such as Metal Gear Solid and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timein the sense that it redefined what was possible in the gaming medium and set a new standard for narrative power, presentation and ingenuity. It's fun to look back on the original game now, nearly 30 years later, as it's obviously dated by modern standards, with pre-rendered backgrounds and simplistic character models, but such perceived flaws tend to melt away when you're actually in the game, hands on sticks. All this is to say that the original FF7 is a landmark title in its own right, and deserves to be celebrated when it turns 30 next year.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation makes a huge change to the battle system
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation confirms that a major change to the game's combat system is one that longtime Final Fantasy fans can enjoy.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch right in the middle of FF7's 30th anniversary
- Final Fantasy 7 release date (Japan): January 31, 1997
- Final Fantasy 7 release date (North America): September 7, 1997
- Final Fantasy 7 release date (PAL): November 17, 1997
Square Enix has not officially revealed the specific release date for Final Fantasy 7 Revelationonly confirms that it's targeting a spring 2027 launch window. Even so, this relatively wide window seems particularly fitting, as it would place the game right between the various release dates of the 1997 game. The original Final Fantasy 7 first launched in late January 1997, but only in Japan; its North American version was not released until September of that year, and the PAL version (territories outside of Japan and NA, such as Oceania and Europe) came soon after, in November.
At the risk of sounding reductive, we can say that Final Fantasy 7s Japanese launch was in the middle of the winter season, while its global launch averages to mid-autumn. Apparently, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation can't cover both of those release windows, so splitting the difference with a Spring 2027 launch makes a lot of sense. In this way, FF7 Revelations release date will further cement the entire year 2027 as a tribute to FF7rather than just a specific date, month or season. This interpretation is consistent with the Square Enix official FF7 Revelation press release, which notes that 2027 is “the 30th anniversary year of the landmark original game.”
It's hard to know if Square Enix originally planned to quit Final Fantasy 7 remake project during the 30th anniversary of the original game, but it's definitely a fitting result. Few games have had such a huge and indelible impact on the gaming landscape as Final Fantasy 7and while not everyone loves the remakes, it's clear that they're homages to the originals rather than replacements. In other words, the FF7 remakes are made with love and reverence for their 1997 progenitor, so ending the remake saga on such a momentous “birthday” couldn't be more perfect.
Limits Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's release window
If you're like me, you're probably champing at the bit for more info on Final Fantasy 7 Revelationincluding its specific release date. As a quick refresher, the spring release period is generally defined by the following dates:
-
Start spring 2027: March 20
-
Spring 2027 ends: June 21
With 2027 still pretty far away (we will have already passed heavy hitters like Marvel's Wolverine and Grand Theft Auto 6 then) not many 2027 games have been given hard release dates. The biggest games in early 2027 appear to be Stranger than heavenwill be released on January 21 and Fablewhich launches on February 23. Persona 4 Revivala game that will probably have a good bit of crossover with it Final Fantasy 7 Revelations player base, is also launched in the second half of February.
Other highly anticipated games targeting a spring 2027 release window include Mass effect heir Exodus and The Expanse: Osiris Rebornas well as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacyand Spyro: A Realm Beyondall of which will probably spread through the Spring window to give themselves as much breathing space as possible. Still, it's hard to argue that any of these Spring 2027 releases are as hotly anticipated as FF7 Revelation— they will probably try to get out Revelations way, rather than the other way around.
It's hard to know if Square Enix originally planned to quit Final Fantasy 7 remake project during the 30th anniversary of the original game, but it's definitely a fitting result.
Mid-to-late March 2027 will probably mark the first rush of the 2027 Spring Games, as that's when much of the excitement from Fable and Persona 4 Revival will have died down. The question is whether Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will take advantage of this immediately, or let other Spring/Q2 releases go before it. These types of insider decisions can be difficult to track, however Revelations release window will be easier to guess once we know the launch dates of its biggest competitors.
Also worth noting are the release dates for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy Rebirthwhich launched on April 10, 2020 and February 29, 2024 respectively. Maybe Revelation will reflect the April launch Remakeespecially since the Leap Day release of Rebirth was a special circumstance, perhaps even related to the series' newfound focus on alternate realities and dimensions. An April release date for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would also place the game in the middle of the spring launch period, rather than the beginning or the end, which could better help it maintain relevance throughout the 30th anniversary.
