Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Makes Big Promise About Switch 2 Version

Nintendo fans have no reason to worry about the Switch 2 version of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthsaid a senior Square Enix official. The company aims to deliver a port at least on par with the Switch 2 version of its first remake, noting that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can even surpass its predecessor in terms of handheld optimization.

The Switch 2 version of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade has recently locked in a concrete release date: January 22, 2026. Separately, Square Enix said the rest of the remake trilogy will also make its way to Nintendo's hybrid console eventually, albeit without sharing any details.

FF7 Rebirth May Outpace FF7 Remake in Switch 2 Performance

While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has hailed as one of the most graphically impressive games of 2024, it should still translate well to the Switch 2's hardware, which is modest compared to current-gen consoles from PlayStation and Xbox. It is according to longtime Final Fantasy producer Naoki Hamaguchi, who told VGC that Square Enix is ”working very hard” to ensure the game runs as well as possible on the hybrid console. “[Switch 2 owners] will get a version that is as satisfying and as high quality as the first game, if not higher, says the boss.

FF7 Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Port already looks promising

Although it has yet to reach Nintendo's hybrid console, the new port of the first entry in the remake trilogy already looks promising. Square Enix recently shared a video comparing the images of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Switch version 2 to other platforms indicated that the game will at least offer a similar level of graphical fidelity during cutscenes. On the performance front, the developer committed to targeting 30 frames per second.

Although the Switch 2 version of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth aiming for similar performance levels to its predecessor, it can still deliver on Hamaguchi's promise of improvement – for example by offering a more stable frame rate. While the likelihood of Square Enix aiming for more than 30fps on the Switch 2 is pretty low, it can't be completely ruled out.
