Square Enix and odd game names go too well. Triangle strategy, different daylife, Kriskärna -final fantasy -reunion, paranormasight (OK, but that a bang, though) and so much more; Jokes are constantly broken.
Now an upcoming Mobile Gacha agrees in the rankings, as the revered Dragon Quest franchis – which just announced a fantastic look remake of its underestimated seventh main line payment – sheep, checks notes, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.
Crushing stuff
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow was revealed a few days ago, but it wasn't until today that we got our first look at something beyond its name. Core gameplay loop involves, natch, crushing and growing. What it actually meansHowever, Smash/Grow is a Roguelite RPG where you “crush yourself through hordes of monsters”, after which you “grow your character with random blessings”. Powerful things, innit.
Square Enix claims that each assignment will be unique, and its emphasis on special attacks to destroy whole hordes of monsters mixed with the roguellitic loop gives everything a very vampire surviving brilliance.
The fact that Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is a mobile GACA game that is enough to deter many potential players in the West from giving it once; While I think I give plenty of incentives for many in Japan, China and Korea to dive in. Which does not say that there will not be lots of English speaking that will fortunately include it, but probably not so many as – wait, did I just say that a Dragon Quest Mobile title is a global at the same time launch? It is safe.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is scheduled for a stillbenous 2026 edition on iOS and Android. There will be an open beta from October 14 to October 21, but you have to apply at some time between today and October 2 about a chance to enter. A maximum of 30,000 testers will be allowed entry. Correct Warning: Your competition for application approval will really include yours.
Something tells me that I will turn between the no doubt-lined Dragon Quest Smash/grow something-truncated (but still undoubtedly long) Dragon Quest 7 converted for months. Which is, if I am pessimistic here, about as long as Smash/Grow can survive in the West, anyway.
