Dragon Quest 12 development restarted, no more Flames Of Flate

After exactly five years, Square Enix has finally shared more about Dragon Quest 12, now called Beyond Dreams, during a celebratory 40th anniversary livestream.

While the Dragon Quest series is hardly starved of content (and I say that very appealingly as a Kingdom Hearts fan), there is one big release that no amount of remakes, spin-offs and mobile titles can make up for its silence. I'm talking, of course, about Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, which was announced five years ago today.

At the time, the only concrete news we've gotten about DQ12 is that it's going to be a darker story than the rest of the series, as hinted at in the surprisingly dramatic teaser trailer. Everyone has been waiting a very long time to finally know more about the future of Dragon Quest, and that day has finally arrived, even if the game is no longer any of what I just said.

Dragon Quest 12 update given on 40th anniversary live stream

The drought is finally over, sort of

Earlier this month, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii teased that a special live stream would be coming to celebrate the series' 40th anniversary, which was confirmed just a few days ago. Since it's such a big number for the series, pretty much everyone has been hoping that an update would finally be shared on Dragon Quest 12.

Please just give me Dragon Quest 9 again.

During the live stream, it was announced that Dragon Quest 12's development has restarted over the past five years after hitting many obstacles along the way. The 12th game is now subtitled Beyond Dreams, and we got an extensive look at its notably more upbeat and breezy vibes than what was promised for Flames of Fate.

It was also confirmed that Beyond Dreams will feature both the late Akira Toriyama's designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music, if that wasn't clear from what we saw.

Outside of the in-game footage that was shared and some hints about the game's plot, which is fittingly based on the protagonist's dreams, we didn't learn much more about Dragon Quest 12. Horii confirmed that things will be fine after the restarted development, but since we don't know when that happened, there aren't really any dreams to expect.
