Devil May Cry Season 2 Final Review

As Devil May Cry Season 2 reaches its climax, episode 8 begins with the barrier between Makai and Earth breaking again, thanks to the power of the Force Edge (also known as Sparda in its unleashed form). When Argosax is thrust into Makai during his battle against the Sons of Sparda, Vergil follows him, thirsting for revenge against the beings who orchestrated his family's downfall and caused his harrowing imprisonment in Makai. Dante, refusing to lose his sibling again, goes after him.

Once they arrive in Makai, Dante is surprised by the poisonous air of the demonic world, where Vergil tells him to focus on his demonic part to get used to it faster. It's clear as day that Vergil is in his natural element, while Dante doesn't have the luxury of adapting to the environment, as the conflict between Argosax and Mundus blows up immediately.

devil-may-cry season 2 review

Devil May Cry Season 2 is a Smokin' Sick Stylish Comeback for Netflix

From the expected CAPCOM references to something no one expected to see made canon, Devil May Cry Season 2 has left us shocked in the best possible way.

The fight between Mundus and Argosax

As the titanic duel between the former King of Hell and the current Lord of Makai unfolds, Dante and Virgil rush to the Force Edge to have it ready to close the rift that binds the two worlds. In the meantime, Earth is besieged by demons who has entered through the crack (a detail that will be extremely important for Season 3).

Argosax managed to regain a partial “final form”, but it is not complete, and the disparity in strength between him and Mundus, who is at the peak of his power, begins to shift the battle in favor of the current ruler of Makai. With that said, the battle is massivekeeping us on edge every second, as Dante and Vergil run after their father's blade.

At the critical moment, Mundus obliterates Argosax and immediately turns his attention to the siblings who are then blocked by Beowulf, among other demons from the Makai's Legion. Mundus then confronts Vergil and Danteand reveals the truth about Sparda as an honorable warrior, even when it ended up betraying him.

But the moment he grabs the blade, something happens: Vergil shows his rejection of his human side and confronts Dante, revealing his true intentions. A battle between the two siblings begins, with everything on the line, as Mundus reflects with satisfaction on his apparent victory.

Dante has grown more and more as a duelist since season 1, but his human side has been portrayed as something that weighing him downwhich makes him unable to unleash their full potential.

As the battle rages, we are bombarded with flashbacks of the past where Dante overcame all by sheer force of talent, and Vergil always followed through with fierce efforts. And surprisingly, Vergil uses Dante's old tricks until finally overpower himand spikes him with Yamato, winning the duel.

The next big anime rival may not come from Japan

Anime fans often treat Japan as the crown jewel of the medium, but China's growing donghua industry is challenging Japan's grip on animation.

In a result no one expected, Vergil says goodbye to his brother and pushes him with a powerful slam, driving him to the ground. He grabs the Force Edges and breaks its true form by separating the Amulet, then throws it at Dante, while Mundus rages in anger as he sees his ambitions collapse before his eyes.

As the portal closes, the barrier between the worlds is once again left standing, and Vergil is stranded in Makai once again. He then faces Mundus in a battle for control of the demon world. Only one ruler can be leftand Vergil's intentions are clear as day: If he ever returns to Earth, he will do so as a conqueror, leading the Makai legions as their rightful rulers.

Lady's Choice & hints for future main antagonist

As Dante falls to the grounddefeated and unconscious, the story of Lady and the revelation that Arkham is alive weighs heavily on her. The promise to meet Dante at his favorite restaurant (Fredi) is suddenly brokenand a letter is left with Dante's favorite Strawberry Shake in the counter, while Cindy looks on in awe.

Saying goodbye to an old friend, Nell Goldstein, creator of Dante's signature weapons (Ebony & Ivory), Lady leaves with a suitcase that can only contain one thing: The Kalina Ann rocket launcherLady's weapon in Devil May Cry 3. This is a clear hint of what's to come: The the next big bad to defeat will be Lady's own fatherwhich is revealed to be Jester (guess by now everyone already knew).

best devil may cry games ranked

Every Devil May Cry game, ranked

Capcom's Devil May Cry is responsible for some of the best action games of all time, but some entries are (much) better than others.

And from this one, it's all speculationthus take it with a pinch of salt. One of the key factors in knowing what's to come in Season 3 has already been revealed: Lady has broken her bonds and left Darkcom for good, while Dante is still unconscious and bleeding on the ground. She's on the hunt for the man who was once her father and has become the demonic Jester most DMC fans know from Devil May Cry 3, which makes us wonder: Will she be headed for some scenario similar to the Tower of Temen-Ni-Gru?

If so, the direction the series will take is clear as day. Devil May Cry Season 3 might fit perfectly with the events of DMC 3, with Dante and Vergil reuniting, this time, as sworn enemies fighting for what they believe in, and Lady confronting her past once and for all.

And Trish? Well, it's up to Adi Shankar to decide, but she could very well be a part of the plans for Season 3, or not. That's the only “loose end” fans are confused about. The order of events in the series is definitely different from Lore, but at the same time quite similar.

The broken pendant

Devil May Cry 2 Dante's Locket

A final scene shows Dante is still breathing, defeated and heartbrokenbecause he's lost more than just a simple duel in terms of sibling rivalry: He's lost his only family member yet again.

This is when the pendant breaks again, to symbolize their broken bond and the rift that has been created. Dante has been presented as the weak one, without any clear goal in life, without experience of battle. Basically, he was treated like a rag doll for most of the two seasons, leading many fans to believe that something really wrong is going on there.

But one thing is clear: Only character growth can help the demon hunter stand on your feet again. And he's already hit rock bottom: Abandoned by his first love, separated from his brother, with nowhere to go, and beaten to a pulp. So, the only way now is up. What happens in Season 3 will be an opportunity to see the true Dante, the one everyone loves from the early games.
