Kind of like the opening of Dead Space, Dire Echo follows a protagonist who is sent to investigate a space station that has gone radio silent. Called Echo-7, the station has an eerie, claustrophobic design that should feel familiar to fans of the early Dead Space game. An alien creature also stalks the player throughout the experience, bringing comparisons Alien: Isolation. However, Dire Echo doesn't lean as heavily on the hide-and-seek game mechanics that defined that game.

As for the game, Dire Echo is mostly a walking simulation game with simple puzzles that add to the overall excitement. There is no combat, and players follow a linear path as the starship captain tasked with exploring a terrifying abandoned space station. For the most part, players move from point A to point B while interacting with wall-mounted buttons to unlock new paths. An alien creature also appears throughout the game, providing frequent jump scares and discouraging progress. Towards the end, there are some smaller parkour sections, but the experience mainly revolves around walking, running and observing environments with a flashlight.
Dire Echo features a cosmic sci-fi horror story centered around a secret government project known as the DIRE program, also known as the Deep Interdimensional Resonance Engine. The program appears to focus on initiating contact with entities from other dimensions, an effort that ultimately leads to a disastrous outcome. Players get to piece together what happened by collecting and listening to audio logs scattered across the space station. Dire Echo is also a relatively short PC game, with a campaign that takes around an hour to complete, depending on how quickly players solve their puzzles.
Gamers looking for more free PC games can also download Tell me why on Steam, which is free to keep until the end of June. There is also a retro style game called Gravity Circuit on Steam which will be free to claim until June 14th. The Epic Games Store's weekly freebies are also available, with the current selection included Rogue Waters and Songs of Conquest.
